3G is more efficient as it uses a more efficient form of modulation. On the other hand, the behavior of 3G at the edges of cells and where cells overlap is more complex than 2G, so the specific claim of 80 calls per base station versus 17 for 2G is arguable. If you are interested in the specifics there is a lot of technical detail available on the web. Wikipedia might be a place to start -- try "Gaussian minimum shift keying" (used in GSM) to start. (But only if you are really seriously interested in the engineering details).

“3G as a technology is more advanced and more efficient. One base station in a 3G network can take 80 calls as against 17 calls per base station in 2G,” says Sudhin Mathur, Manager, Sony-Ericsson.

ericsson said this. i can't belive it.
this is wrong.

Rahul - It was difficult to address all the topics in one post so I focussed on mobile companies. I agree that fair play should be there for all - and it seems that there's plenty of opportunity for all to grow and profit. It may take time to see who's the clear winner.
Thanks for the comments.

Yes, you have restricted this post to these topics only -

"This post will cover 3 topics: Overall business environment for mobile industry, Mobile Players and Growth Areas & trends - 3G’s future."

But the main topic is about "Telecom Growth in Pakistan's Neighbors: -Part 1-India". Hence the above comment. However, the post is nicely done otherwise.

You fave focussed only on number of mobile subscribers. In that too, GSM and CDMA subscribers have been put in one slot. The fact remains that BSNL is the No. 1 telecom company in India and 3rd largest in Asia if all telecom subscribers are taken - GSM, CDMA and FIXEDLINE. Also BSNL was allowed to start its GSM service only in 2002 and it is still not allowed entry in two of the major metros - Delhi and Mumbai. While anyone can say anything about Govt. companies, the comparison should be fair and based on principle of level-play (the favourite word of private companies in India some years ago) for State owned enterprises and private companies.
