Is ZONG EDGE Really Rs.400 Per Month?
Some of us have been discussing the new Zong EDGE rates at TGP. Is it really just 400 for EDGE? And what about the coverage? With the official launch ZONG folks have been busy and at times it is hard to confirm even simple things like this. The ZONG website does a nice job of re-branding and all but at the time of this writing there are still a few pages with incomplete or no information. So we thought we will ask you, the readers, if they have an answer to this.
Here’s what the ZONG website says:

But international sms rates are not listed. Plus i don’t think they are as much cheap as other once. i think its just has matched with other packages of warid and telenor. Just under new brand and new theme :)
Offering Edge services PKR 400 / month can not be a deal breaker in any case. People who do use unlimited internet services on their existing connections, would not see it as an advantage. To be able to make sense, first they’ll need a good subscriber base and they can not attract subscribers with PKR 400 / month internet package. Once they have subscribers, they need to come up with new and original content and once subscribers get addicted to the content, only then their internet packages would start making sense.
In my opinion, if they really wanted to attract customers on the basis of their Edge services, better make it free for everyone and then some people might think about changing their connections to Zong. Once they reach a threshold, only then they will need to work on their internet packages
Offering GPRS for Rs400/- is not a big deal. Mobilink is already offering Rs500/- per month for postpaid customers this deal. Mobilink has bigger coverage and good GPRS softwares and equipments.
Mr Adil, International SMS are mentioned in VAS icon (Value Added Services). Its also stupidity that you are mentioning local SMS with teriff and Int’l SMS charges in VAS.
An other bigger threat coming soon is Nokia 810 Tablet. it is WiMAX enabled and can work in WiMAX coverage areas. So users can buy it for high speed and low cost broadband on their Nokia 810 Tablets. GPRS/EDGE/DSL are not substitute of WiMAX presently. Only 3G (Third Generation) system is reaching speed of WiMAX. and we can’t expect 3G at cheaper rates in Pakistan. Although 3G is not available in Pakistan right now also.
well i dont know about you guys but i think its a great deal…yes mobilink does offer unlimited gprs at 500/month but that is only on a postpay connection not on a prepaid connection. Zong is offering unlimited GPRS on both prepaid and postpaid connections and also saving you rs.100 and Mr. Umer it would be absurd if these service providers started giving out free gors/edge to their users, but yes if u give them somehting no one else is offering right now in the market at a low price in my opinion that is a deal breaker for sure.
And well if you’re talking about the rates then it is way more economical than any network out there. No one has matched 12 aaney call to all networks including PTCL.

It is not absurd to offer free services to users when an operator has to build a subscriber base. Especially when we are talking about a service which at maximum is dimensioned to handle 5% of the total subscriber capacity of the operator.
Moreover, operators earn a large pie of their revenues from Postpaid customers. Not bringing them in perspective would be naive. Any postpaid customer would not change his connection just because Zong is offering unlimited EDGE at Rs. 100 cheaper than his existing connection. To a large number of Postpaid users, Rs. 100 would not make a lot of difference and it would definitely be not worth changing connection for.
For those people who are about to become Postpaid customers of any operator, they are the ones Zong has to focus on at the moment. To win them over, a price difference of Rs. 100 would not make a difference when 1) Network Coverage is not comparable 2) Good content is not available
At the moment, it would just look like another package from Zong, it wont have any impact on existing Postpaid customers.

If you have a cell phone with gprs-modem capability, its the best. You will not even need to plug the SIM card out. (my n73 does it good). Otherwise, you can get a USB GPRS Modem like this: Light Wave USB GPRS/GSM

Dear forget every thing like USB or GPRS modem. If your cell phone and notebook has Blue Tooth then put both of them ON and configure them. But you will need to visit your Telecom operator’s service centre for internet explorer settings.
Keep in mind, GPRS or EDGE (only in limited areas) is not substitute of DSL or WiMAX for high speed exploring. Its very slow and disconnect very fast. Even web browsing by using V-fone internet is quite fast and cheap than this GPRS on notebooks.
There is also one card available (device). In which you have to fix your SIM and insert in laptop slot for card. Its the best option in all. you will find good speed by that device as compared to linking notebooks with mobiles.
Zong is good as far packages and other offers are concerned. Off course they have to catch new subscribers. But if you analyse their hardware and equipment. Its totally China made. Where as Telenor is using Nokia and Siemens, Warid is using Siemens, Mobilink is Using Siemens, Motorola and Alcatel, Ufone is using Nortel and Siemens.
Best among all are Siemens and Nokia. Worst among all is made in China and Alcatel. In long run, only that company will compete which will provide fast and reliable service. voice quality, connecting time, roaming, signals, call disconnection and lot more depends on Hardware. So once telecom sector will get full mature then people will move from cheap service to quality service. (as professionals using it right now).
Till then, Zong can add more customers. Prepaid customers are not reliable. they can switch any time. Post Paid customer remains with same company for long time and 40% of revenue is coming from few Post paid customers. So companies can’t neglect them at all.

i subscribed to Zong unlimited gprs/edge package. I use it in islamabad where zong offers Edge services. The connection is really slow , disconnects a lot . avg download speed is 1KB/sec.
I have been complainin about it for the last 15 days , and everytime i call them , they say it will be fine in 2 days.
i m also using mobilink unlimited grps package. mobilink is currently gprs , soon they’re gonna offer edge, and the avg download speed is 5KB/sec. I use voip software to call abroad with mobilink’s gprs.
mobilinks gprs is wayyyyyyyyyyyy faster than ZonG’s Edge.
mobilink has a bandwidth of 33.6 Kb/sec , ZonG claims to has 59.2 Kb/sec
ZonG is pathetic , the network sucks , the internet sucks.
it really doesnt make a lot of difference saving a few paisas . at the end of the day all u can save is like 10 to 15 rupees , but its about quality and service.
try calling zong’s callcenter .

I think, or according to the my point of view the zong has done a good work initially in the Pakistan but it has to improve.
Specially the coverage….
I know that some have the problems about the coverages but you have to face it because of the new company not as new because it is Paktel initially but it has to improve itself

customer support is a complete disaster. you can dial their customer support only 5 times for a day. and if the guy is a “topi” then, he wont pick ur call up and after 5 tries, you’ve to wait for another day.

I also endorse that Zong GPRS is far better than Telenor and Ufone. Telenor EDGE works good but as you know edge service is not available every where. ZOng have no problem right now. Can’t say about future because, as customers will increase load on GPRS ll also increase and all will be effected then.

If Anybody interested in using the ZONG GPRS through a computer can use these settings. To my experience ZONG GPRS works very well, and gave me a data transfer rate starting from 55kbps and came down till 14kbps on a Nokia 9300.

I am using Warid Unlimited GPRS Data Plan.
The speed i get is 6-8 kbps. I am quite comfortable with it. And as previously it was said that its not the rates matter, its the reliability and quality. I was also a bit shocked by the rates of zong unlimited gprs, but after the reviews i got, i am quite easy now. That zong will not last for long unless it becomes quality oriented rather price conscious.

I am using ZONG unlimited gprs package for last 15 days in Karachi and I am very satisfied with it because it is about 3 times faster than my dial up connection. Personally, I HATE POSTPAID connection and ZONG is the only PREPAID service who has UNLIMITED gprs package in Pakistan till now. ZONG had deducted 460 rupees from my balance and activated the package in just 8 minutes.
I am using it on my PC (Windows XP SP2) with modem connection of my Samsung E200 mobile through USB cable. These are the accurate results that I got while using unlimited package on PC in peak hours with EDGE connection (8:30pm Saturday):

Zong.com.pk loaded in 25.74 seconds

293 KB MP4 ringtone downloaded in 45.50 seconds (transfer rate : 6.44 KB/sec)
I admit that during these tests, internet was disconnected two times. But speed and reliability is much better than any dial up connection. While PTCL V wireless data transfer rate is also same as ZONG in peak hours (5—8 KB/sec) as told by my friend.
I am posting this comments through ZONG EDGE connection from my PC.

Mr.Usman your views are admitable, But they were of importance if you not mentioned the Dc time. Many users who use internet can’t afford the disconnection. If i say about myself, I use warid unlimited gprs plan. And there are many applications running in the background which need internet access, So I can’t bear a single disconnection, and thats the thing what i like about Warid. I have a laptop and its on nearly for 1- 2 days. I have alot of work to do on it. So during this long connection time, not even a single disconnection and no difference in speed.
And lastly…………….if you want reliability, Mobilink and Warid are on the Top. There’s no match of their GPRS network.

The disconnection time was less than 2 minutes both the times. And please let me inform to you that today still there is NO disconnection at all although it is Sunday holiday. ZONG gprs is still connected from last 4 hours 55 minutes without any disconnection.
I was using JAZZ Mobilink since last 4 years but not satisfied with their gprs rates (highest rates as compared to others) without EDGE. But now, ZONG has solved all my internet related problems.

Please keep in mind, GPRS/EDGE is not a substitute of DSL or 3G. and specially if matter comes for PC/notebook. If some body is getting normal speed on PC through GPRS/EDGE, its blessing because GPRS/EDGE target market is not PC. Its target market is only Mobile/PDA’s.
As far speed and disconnection is concerned then in available resources ( all telecom companies) the best is ZONG. either its speed, reliability or money. But keep in mind I’m comparing for Mobiles data services only. If you want high speed connection for PC then WiMAX technology is superior than DSL in present time. It is not dependent on any fixed line modes for data transmission.
So, Its on you. You can’t find best Quality and Best Price at same time. Its commonsense that either you will get best quality at high rate or best price with compromised quality.
In short, ZONG is going well for GPRS/EDGE and Wateen for Broadband (WiMAX Technology) i.e. Maximum 27 Mb/seconds…and we have to wait for 3G ( If ever come to Pakistan)… on 3G, you can get speed of 7.5 Mega Bytes per Second (As I’m using).

DON’T subscribe to ZONG monthly GPRS package if you wanna download something valuable.
The speed is good, but the bastard staff won’t let you grab anything from RAPIDSHARE or MEGAUPLOAD and will often interrupt your downloads (specially in the night) to fulfill their own f u c k i n g desires (may be, they are keep collecting porno things all the time).
Moreover, they are keep resetting their SERVERS frequently (usually, in every 6-8 hours).
If you do complain, their asshole CROs will consider you a ‘chootiya’.
I have been a victim for the whole shitty month, and now looking for other service providers…

I am using Zong`s unlimited internet,got it for 460 Rs/-. I on average get speeds around 20 Kb/s during the day and at night 31-32 kb/s. I have downloaded numerous torrents (on PC and Mobile as well),have downloaded files,songs from rapidshare as well other site. Have`nt got a problem yet.

The speed difference is because of the ports (that was the case on PC). You can change the port speed but I don`t think it will improve the browsing/downloading speed at all.
I have received your message. It is stated that when I put the caple wire of mobil in the port of the pc, the speed comes up at 460.8 kbps but when I un-plug the mobile caple from the port of pc and connect the bluetooth in the port of pc then speed comes down at 115.2 kbps. The port is same at one time it works fast and on other time it works slow, what is the reason?

Please check the specification of bluetooth dongle/ adapter that you are using with your PC. Your bluetooth dongle/adapter can only support maximum transmission rate of 115.2 kbps. This is not the port problem. And also Nokia 6230i has bluetooth version 1.2 only. Now a days, new mobiles are using bluetooth version 2.0 . Use USB connection if you want to use your mobile as modem.

Thanks. I have received your message again. I have checked Bluetooth Dongle v2.0. I am useing the same version v2.0, but the problem is same. Speeds always comes at 115.2 kbps. It is stated that when I use my mobile as modem through usb cable the speed comes at the rate of 460.8 kbps but when I use Bluetooth in the pc port through modem of Noki 6230i the speed comes down at the rate of 115.2 kbps. I can not underderstand the case as yet. Please tell me the case of less speed. Thanks.

I have Zong hourly GPRS enabled SIM and trying to connect to internet with PC. But is not successfull as I have installed GPRS setting for K700i provided by ZONG.
Please provide me some guidence in this regards if anyone know about these setting and he use it on K700i or other Sonyerrecson moble phone.

Connect to internet> Settings> APN = zonginernet
password not required if you are confused, put zong in password and login field.
and voila… every thing is done.

I use warid telecoms EDGE services through my mobile and the speed I get is great. I think its the speed that matters more hence the quality. Im planning to buy new USB dongle now if somebody can tell me would there be any difference when I connect the data sim through a warid usb dongle, as compared to when i connect it with my mobile. Any engineering gurus ??

window show modem in mobile.. when i press connect internet button thay said no modem there… modam driver install perfect..
