3G in Pakistan From The Viewpoint Of Equipment Makers
The last post about 3G in Pakistan had Mobilink’s presentation. Now lets take a look at the views of equipment makers like Huawei, ZTE and Ericsson. Obviously all of them were optimistic about 3G and they talked about the benefits and the smooth transition to 3G they can provide.
ZTE had a very well thought out set of slides. Here is how it was organized.
- WCDMA Worldwide Deployment
- WCDMA in Emerging Markets
- Advantages of WCDMA for Pakistan
- Economical 2G/3G Construction Solution
There was agreement that the key issue for WCDMA is handset pricing and infrastrucutre investment.

In addition to the two issues mentioned by you, 3G license cost is a big issue too. Furthermore, for countries like Pakistan, where macro-economic situation and literacy rate is not that great for the moment, spending so much money on 3G can be a waste of investment and may result in big losses for the cellular players who are already fighting really hard in a cut throat competitive environment. An alternate route for Pakistan can be to go directly on 4G (LTE etc) after 2-3 years.
What will be the consumers buying behavior if 3G is launched in Pakistan?
