Telenor Leads Subscriber Growth In Q1 Of 2008
Here’s a view of how the mobile companies stack up against each other. In terms of the subscriber growth from Jan-Mar of 2008, Telenor is at the top.
In terms of total number of subscribers (see the chart on the right), Telenor (16.7 million) is closing the gap with Ufone (17.2 million). I am interested in hearing views about the drivers of this growth.
By end of Q2 it will be interesting to re-visit this and see whether Zong lived up to the buzz it created!

Hi this is for Telenor Users kindly share this useful information with everyone
Dear Telenor Family,
Effective 1st of Feb 2009 all new prepaid SIMs (which are not First Call Activation till 31st Jan) will be activated once the subscriber dials 789 (from the new SIM purchased) & verifies his CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card). All activations for subscribers who do not have CNICs but carry passports and other documents will be carried out at Telenor Sales & Service Centers.
This is an industry wide step, initiated by PTA & implemented by all telecom operators to ensure subscriber security. Together all cellular operators have already launched an advertising campaign to communicate this important news to the market.
Telenor S&D , CRD and IT and along with many other teams have also made special arrangements to make this new process as smooth as possible for all our new joining customers.
A Telenor specific media campaign will also go on-air on the subject from 1st Feb.
Kindly feel free to share this very important development with all your teams and business partners.
i do agree that most network providers lack transparencyy….especially in the TVCs….it gets misleading……even if they promote some service to be freee it really isnt free …Zong leads in hidden charges…..however it is a good start of the year where we have new offers from Jazz, U fone and djuice…….as i use Ufone and djuice both…and i have recently subscribed to the djuice aik paisa offer….i would also like to share it ….its a 24 hrs offer where we can any one friend of ours only in 1 paisa per second…….n also we can include that one special friend into the Family and Friends list …..the call rates are really low and its very convenient cox all of us have that one special person :)
Hi all…
Well sorry (2 disturb) while u people busy sharing Pak’s Mobile fone market…. Zong VS Ufone VS Telenor n Mobilink VS Warid…
There is a suggestion for TRANSPIRACY IN MOBILE CHARGES
Just like Mobily and Aljawal (in Saudi Arabia), All mobile fone operators in Pakistan should send an SMS to their customers after every call mentioning the charges and time used. For Example
“CALL SUMMARY: Last call charges Rs 8.5, total call time 4min 38sec, your balance left Rs 78″
I was much satisfied with the service providers while in Arabia. One can know promotion expiries and other hidden charges applied.
What do you think? ……………
“M AAMIR ABDUL RAZZAQ
ap ka kall rates bohat high hain please sari zandgi wala package zong ki Atarah ke lain phir bat bana gi warid walo gi.
Thanks.

Obviously the existing VP Marketing shouldn’t get disheart by the move as their is always a place for Chief Marketing Officer. The guy seems to have put significant amount of hard work to bring where brand image of Mobilink is today but as the competition moves-in certain changes need to take place from the HR prespective to move things forward and keep the growth graph consistent. So I think what I see the name Bilal Munir Sheikh also deserves a promotion!
I’m bad but not that bad :) and I’ll stop here!
Also they would need to restructure their marketing strategy side of business and branch directly to the board (CEO). By looking at the management lineup on their website I can’t seem to trace an independent marketing strategy figure, so I guess that falls under the Marketing and being treated as an equal part where the share should be more than that.
They need to evolve with position of VP Market Development & Strategy. A completely independent market strategy unit would beneift and lead the next phase growth of Mobilink, otherwise “it seems impossible” for them to compete upwards. You can smell a lot of mixmanagement from their communications and strategies, it’s world apart to even a simple analyst like me. I’m telling ya, this is the way forward. Hire a VP MD&S.
Mobilink needs to change its custom of people interaction and working inside their organization by being an equal employer. Most male folk is waiting for the gender changing technology to come to Pakistan to get a position inside their Marketing department.
Hi, I am a mobilink user for last many years. Mobilink has gone through different phases from sole market player to leading a very competitive market. I think the basic edge mobilink has is its Customer services and coverage. No doubt it is good and they are making all out efforts to stay at top. I had couple of experience to visit their offices in Lahore although you have to wait for your turn however that is worth waiting for. They make you feel important. Few member of my family are using Telenor and Warid, their call rates are bit less if you call to other networks however customer care is not of that level. In terms of innovations Telenor and Mobilink are leading the market. Zong although has launched it self with a big bang however they least care for customers convenience. Long waiting ques can be witness outside their offices especially keeping in view this hot weather. They should have foreseen this earlier and opened more offices instead of roadside stalls.
Late night calling rates has badly effected connectivity of all companies. I guess this is the bad side of competition as you have to offer what others are (good or bad)!!!
Telenor is no doubt going well and in right direction. Its the only company, who is not giving 1 year validity on 100Rs card but subscribers are coming n joining it. It shows they have active customers. where as mobilink is just increasing numbers by adding Rs100 card in franchises and loading 20000 numbers against each NIC. Mobilink is going down due to corruption it their departments and every body is busy in eating it.
Main driver of this growth is A&P & strong retention Policy.
if u see, their commission structure to their franchies and sales persons , almost, 60% commssion is on retention. and also u can easily see their A &P Ploicy, through TV, and also Billborads and wall chacking. they are maintaining their visibility, if u travel on GT road, u will see every wall has Telenor Paint.
but i must say their retention policy is very strong. as their churn rate is very low.
I am using Warid Zahi for a long time now, pretty much since the start of Warid operations. The service has been great. There was hardly a downtime of a few hours twice, since I have the connection.
However, Warid is doing extremely bad in terms of its billing procedures. I have been using Warid for so long and have a history of always paying my bills on time. Even then, I’d get my outgoing blocked suddenly, if my credit hits the limit. And if I am out of city or away from their franchise, within hours I’d loose my incoming as well. Its like treating postpaid customers worse then prepaid. Prepaid at lease get to keep their incoming.
And requesting them to open outgoing, till the time one reaches the franchise is so embarrassing at times when they don’t realize that they are making an old customer go through this pain. And if it happens on Sunday, then you had it !
Just because of their bad billing procedures, I am seriously thinking to port my number to Telenor.
Warid is loosing customers because of their bad customer service and on top of it, crappy marketing. Another area where they are lacking is innovation. Telenor is more welcoming to new ideas, new products and is targeting some very niche segments of the market, whereas Warid is such pathetic when it comes to innovation.
Mobilink is still carried ahead with the momentum it gained earlier. They aren’t doing anything special to stay in that spot. Ufone however has come with relevant marketing and good packages. Customer loyalty is good when it comes to Ufone.
Zong, still has to make a mark either way. Their package ‘One number free for life’ is making good progress. As Babar said, it would be interesting to see the results at the end of Q2
I’m telenor persona customer but feel trouble after lanching the package of free calls (11 to 2) in response to Zong package. There package fails very badly the network is busy all the time it seems that they didn’t have home work before launching the package.
Arshad
What makes you think Warid is giving away 100 on 100 recharge ?
The only difference is that Warid deducts 10% withholding Tax 15% Sales Tax on every call or sms. While others Deduct 10% withholding tax when you recharge and charge 15% on every call or sms.
Hi im a Telenor Djuice and Warid Zem user.
I Use Djuice Cuz of it’s Sms Packages n midnite calls to 5 fav numbers only.I dun use djuice for calls Cuz of it’s high Calling rates to all nerworks i meant they detect Rs 2.88/min to all no’s Plus they detect Rs9 on every 100 recharge.ON the other hand Warid Zem LCR Applies only Rs2.06/min to all nertwrks n
1.90 in warid 2 warid calls With No TAxEx on Recharge i mean 100 ka 100 :)
Good corporate governance that is resulting in consistent services which is helping retaining customers, I’d say.
