Profitability Challenges In A Low ARPU Market
Continuing on the series of posts from TeleCON 2008, this one is on Profitability Challenges in a Low ARPU market. This presentation was made by Sajjad Hussain, Director Networks of Ericsson. It has some material which students and researchers will find particularly useful.
Naturally the presentation is tilted towards networks, transmission efficiencies, 3G and NGN. But most importantly it talks about the energy consumption and ways to address the energy demand by considering Green Sites which utilize alternative energy sources such as solar power and battery backup. There are a few slides on mobile commerce as well. Here is the full presentation in pdf.Â

Good pfd presentation - thanks, everybody should seriously start thinking about green now - its time now.
I believe one other thing that operators should be focusing on to increase the revenues on a user is to also focus on “non-usual services”. These services would be applied to the consumer let’s say 4 times a month, but their incoming revenues would be higher. Right now we only focus on services that the consumer tries to use frequently, which will stay as it is, but in addition to that these should also be introduced. One of the ways to give raise to your revenues. One of the examples could be delivering lectures by international professors or local professors of repute and this can be arranged by providing a conference call number to the consumer through a website and schedule for the same, for any field, marketing, medicine. Interactive sessions. On the rural side for farmers one can similar seesions once twice a month where farmers can interact and gain for the productivity. Celebrities can connect through a conference call sessions with aspirants models. You can setup a media center website to publish schedules for these calls. This is just one example of non-usual services. The cost to connect with these activities or the charging would be set at a premium end. In order to talk to Aminah Haq, the cost would be lets say Rs. 200/min. Fanatics will go for it.
