Mobilink being the market leader and SMP did not publish anything on the World Telecom Day. They should've said look we have millions of black connections turned into white, Thank you Government of Pakistan for backing us. If it weren't for you we wouldve never purchased the rest of the Kulsum Plaza. Mobilink ki marketing ke par nikal aaye hain ab, koi aanay wala hai jo in ka market share le jaanay waala hai. Badal koi chaanay waala hai jo inka network bithanay waala hai.

Very interesting comments by all. I see PTA performance as a mixed bag. Surely they could do better. And they have benefited a huge deal from the boom in terms of revenue cut and clout.

Rabta Ghar Scheme? So much of the regulator :)

It's PTA's job to look that progress is steamed towards correct direction and Telecom subsidiaries of government are performing well and not keeping the money in their kitties. If we take your perspective then increasing teledensity and subscription shouldnt be their accomplishment and share in GDP, right? It's not like that, authority needs to lead from the front taking everyone together. Vision always comes from a single source, rest of the bodies support in making that vision come true. When it comes to telecom operators picture in the eyes of the public and otherwise, PTA is - it.

Dears,

I attended the conference in Islamabad on 17th May, arranged by CNBC Conferences and it went live on air. Participants were as under:

1- Chairman PTA (Gen. (r) Shehzada Alam)
2- Secretary MoITT (Dr. Hifz-ur-Rehman)
3- Country Director Nokia (Viqar-ul-Islam)
4- Country Director Nortel (Adil )
5- COO KHL (Usman Sheikh)
6- SEVP PTCL (Dr. Sadiq)

Many good points brought forward e.g. Nokia has launched village connection program which would enable villagers to have access to voice and infotainment content and for operators, they will not have to install costly infrastructure, rather it will utilize a Personal Computer, certain H/w and a software running on that PC.

Also, Nokia has researched and are ready to launch their low power consuming BTS/RBS which will not require air conditioning thus reducing the power requirements and also the whole BTS will consume 600-800 watts of power rather than 1600 watts. They are planning to reduce 16% - 35% of current power consumptions by BTS (as they are the most power consuming area of a network.

Gen. (R) Shahzada Alam told that UMTS licenses are to be opened for bid by the end of this year and there would be 3 licenses issued.

Moreover, the points and directions for PTA as mentioned in the comments above are more or less invalid for PTA as they are only a regulator while it is the ministry who makes the policy and policy framework. For telecom services in rural areas, there is a fund Universal Services Fund (guarantees limited) who is already helping operators reach the farthest and most ignored corners of Pakistan and this fund also subsidies operators where the infrastructure cost is high.

More to say..

Best regards,

Nasir Abbas

Aamir, dead right. PTA calls for Dr. Atta. I believe just like the focus on reorganization of HEC led the government to accomplishments in the education sector, same way PTA requires a redo.

Subscribers point of view: PTA Chairman recently said that cellular services are available to 90 percent of Pakistani population...sounds great

Internet bandwidth rates dropped enormously, same is the case with calling rates (local and international)

Economic Point of View: Total Foreign direct investment counts 2 billion $ last year and almost 900 million dollar already in year 2008, is considerable amount. However the margin that telecom sector shares with GDP is significantly low, stands only at 3.something (3.7 states somewhere). CED/GST collections from telecom sector were Rs. 26.8 Billion in year 2005/06. They climbed up to Rs. 36.3 billion in year 2006/07. I am afraid we are not going to cross last year's earning; as telecom sector could generate only Rs. 31 billion in 10 months.

Despite of growing number of telcom users, the revenues are drooping, a point where the think tanks should gather and revise their policies.

SPAM: Over 2 million illegal SIMs, increase in SPAM (Voice and SMS) are other things which should be considered as well.

Regulator side: PTA has done plenty of work over the years, no doubt, but in my opinion they spent money and energy in wrong direction, They focused more on short term achievements rather than a long term plan.

Investors: Many LDI companies went offline, due to competitive market, and mishandling of SMP (significant market player). ROI (Return on Investment) in small to mid sized telecom companies is ver low,

More latter,

Regards

It's strange to see that in that 9 point achievement charter of PTA there is no mention of "rural telecom development" and steps being taken to faciliate various operators in infrastructure and logistics plans, which is the hot topic in this region. It's kind of a naive chart or more like a slide of some technical team's presentation to their board. This is not representing the telecom industry. PTA should focus on the "core subjects" of telecom which are followed by other bodies in this region.

Dear Adnan,

The telecom revolution is one thing ... However, the telecom industries growth should also be followed be the equal concentration on QoS.

I think they should do some research that with the decrease in the prices the subscriber base will definatly increae however, weather there system can handle such traffic load or not ...

The Services of almost every Telecom Operator is starting to Get bad to worse as number of "No Audio" Calls , "Call Drops" , Over Charging instances are increasing day by day ...

I think its high time they should start concentrating bit more in Quality of Service then Quantity of Subscribers .....
