New 3G iPhone For $199
Just as we talked about in the morning the new iPhone is 3G and GPS enabled. Best of all its only $199 for the 8GB version. There’s a wait of 1 month though. A lot of new features, mainly to address the complaints from corporate users. With plans to launch in 70 countries in the next few months I am sure hope Pakistan will get an official carrier too. Is it going to be Mobilink or Telenor? Your guess is as good as mine.

I was also happy at reading this. I thought we will get unlocked iphones in less than Rs. 20K. But $199 is the price if you get it in US with a 2 years AT&T contract. So we cant really say its for $199 :)
Still no plans for Pakistan as predicted singtel will launch it on warid’s network :(

Seriously though, can’t believe they are including markets such as Mali & Niger but not Pakistan??
I was also hopeful Pakistan will be one of the 70 countries getting iphone this year. But I’m shocked that it isn’t!
Not seeing Pakistan on the iPhone map is a disappointment. There must be a reason for this - need to figure it out. One reason could be that the $199 or equivalent price is partially subsidized by the MNO such as ATT in US. Perhaps no mobile company in Pakistan was willing to do that.
@Babar: Price does not seem the issue in pakistani not getting iPhone. In UK, O2 is offering the set free with their £45 and £75 monthly tariffs with 18 months contract. I think this time, Apple is giving the set to companies at a fixed price (say $250) and its upto companies to give it to customers in whatever way they want. My reasoning is backed by Apple’s adoption of tradition model of not asking revenue from carriers.

Apple would not even think about launching the iPhone in Pakistan in the next 5 years and thats because of our target market.
Just imagine: Apple is launching the iPhone in Pakistan, Lahore on its flagship store that recently opened and only 3 people are in line to get it :) lol that would be a disgrace.
Secondly who says you can’t get an iPhone still? I have one and I am happy with it :) You just have to unlock it
Moreover I expect that in Macworld Expo 2009, Apple might make iPhone carrier-less thus allowing it to be carried to any country.

What makes you think only a few people would line up to buy an iPhone? A lot of people are willing to pay $200 (or even $300) for a cell phone. iRaffles probably gets 3 visitors a day asking for an iPhone right now.
I remember paying 12K for an SE T610 6 years ago. 12,000 Rs. is a very reasonable price to pay for an iphone with the feature-set it touts, even if it comes tied up with a data plan by some provider.
I’m a Windows Mobile person, but was planning to get an iphone to play with if it was ever launched in Pakistan - and you’d be surprised at how many people in Pakistan who have never used GPRS buy 15Kish phones, some on installment plans! A couple of years ago, my driver had a more expensive cell than my own.
There’s also a huge secondary market for “official” iphones that large firms hand out to their employees.
I agree with Faried and Sohaib. Any phone around 15K is fair play and this is exactly what Apple wants to do — make the phone affordable to as many as it can. There was a study by a phone manufacturer which clearly showed that Pakistani consumers are status concious and are willing to pay extra for their phones. Overall the ARPU is low but there are enough people with enough money to make PK a decent market for iPhone.

well i think if Apple release iphone in pakistan then carrier wud be Warid as Singtel is a 50% share holder and Signtel is a distributor in other country for iphone and even if its not releasing in Pk then ppl can purchase the unlocked iphone i am still on hold and need some feedback that all these unlocked iphones are fully functional or some features are locked? if anyone have any experience please let me know

hey as long as i know and have been told the iphone will function in pakistan regardless of what sim card you get. It works internationally, thats all. I had the same problem but Im getting the iphone here in the US and going to take it to Pakistan.

want to buy iphone,also want to know that if without breaking contract you bring the mobile to pakistan,than wat will be the problem. means except unlocking it wat we vll have to do to make it workable in pakistani networks

Illusions, a shop in Jinnah Super islamabad is gonna have iphone 3g in september for sale. they were saying k it will be available for 15400 Rs, unlocked. so if can sell it for the same amount then i can come to lahore to purchase it. but tell u what, one of my friend told me k it will be selling for some 40 thousands or so…dun know…..

what you will do with 3G i-Phone. the service is not available in Pakistan. Try to buy simple iPhone and you can easily buy it online and won’t need to unlock it. iPhone will send through courier on your door step.
Why to pay more for 3G…when service is not available in Pakistan. Is this some sort of useless craze to run after such technologies, which merely exists in Pakistan right now.

Sayin’ that ARPU of Pakistan may hinder Apple to launch iPhone is as trash as sour milk. I am some how related to telecom industry and one of the largest GSM provider in Pakistan. We are talking of 15K here but we have staff of over 300 working out of which if we get iPhone for 20K 200 will buy at any instance. Where as if we talk of iPhone 3G and iPhone regular, enhancement done is on GPS and 3G Data network support. Hindrance that Apple has launching iPhone is the Data Support. Any of the network currently present in Pakistan is not supporting 100% of EDGE how ever few of them are even clicks away to 3G but it’s the PTA which does not allow the 3G license to them. Sooner we get a 3G network, Apple will launch iPhone in Pakistan as well andI don’t think iPhone is any how more costly then MacBook Air. So, think about it.
