Mobilink Infinity Commercial Launch: Waived Fees Make It Attractive
Wireless broadband is the ultimate connected service. With the recent commercial launch of Mobilink Infinity–Mobilink’s WiMAX Internet and voice services – folks in Karachi have one more choice. For Mobilink this is an important milestone: they started off as a GSM telecom company and now they provide complete telecommunications services. Obviously the service coverage is limited but its a matter of time before the coverage is widened.
The tariffs are competitive. Interestingly, just after a couple of days of announcing the original rates, Mobilink decided to waive the one-time installation fee and security deposit — total of Rs.4K. The CPE cost is 6K and data plan rates range from Rs.450 (5G/256kbps) to Rs. 1500 (15G/1Mbps). This may start another price war with WiMAX competitors which will benefit consumers, many of which have expressed frustration with other wireless broaband services. This is a big test for WiMAX technology as well and I am sure there are many industry analysts watching this closely.
But there is one thing which is more important than rates: execution and customer service. It seems that Infinity has done its home work and is ready to deliver on the promises mentioned on its website. But the only way to know is to find from the actual users in Karachi!

Hi,
That’s a very interesting development for the Broadband industry. Just to share with you all recently I was visiting a friend of mine in Quetta, (one of the least developed city I have been too) where a Company called COMBNET BROADBAND were offering some amazing broadband packages. They are providing FTTH Connections for CATV and Broadband internet services. Including LAN Gaming and Video on Demand services. Their business model is a very interesting one, the initial charges are Rs 2500/- if you want the CAT-6 drop wire for the last 100 M but if you are interested in a Fiber connection for your PC they charge you 1500 additional and provide you a fiber media converter at your desktop. They are working very quietly on their project without making any noises or too much publicity. According to them they are providing coverage in most residential areas of the city as their main target market is residential customers.
I looked at their packages and was shocked at the rates.
Following are the rates offered by the Provider:
128Kbps 300Rs per Month with Unlimited Downloading
256Kbps 400 Rs per Month with Unlimited Downloading
512Kbps 500Rs per Month with Unlimited Downloading
1Mbps 900Rs per Month with Unlimited Downloading
I decided to get hooked up for one of the packages for Rs 900 as I was planning to stay for a month, I applied for a FTTH connection in the morning and by 6 PM I was all hooked up with a Fiber optic cable at my room. The QoS was amazing I was getting download speeds of 120-128 KBPS (which is the exact speed for a 1Mbps connection) without outage of service anytime of the day even in this terrible load shedding I was connected most of the time using my laptop.
I believe this is a very exciting development for the broadband industry with providers providing such extra-ordinary packages, I hope they start their service soon in other part of the country as well.

[...] Mobilink Infinity Commercial Launch: Waived Fees Make It Attractive [...]
I’m not sure but I guess LinkdotNet would provide to the corporate and Mobilink to the consumer. That’s how they’re drawing the wall.
I dont think there is any particular restriction against providing full range of telecom services. Wateen and PTCL are competing for triple play in many areas. As long as the consumers have the option to choose from many companies, it is fine.
Great……… but LinkDotNet, another subsidiary of an Orascom Telecom is also providing Wi-Max services. How the same company can provide same services under different subsidiaries? How PTA allowed them? Is it not against the company act (PSEB) and as well as the policies and regulations of the PTA?
