PTCL SmartTV: Free Till June Of 2009
After the deregulation of Pakistan telecom, PTCL was forced to compete with other companies and not only for voice but also for internet and most recently for TV. PTCL competes for triple play with Wateen and Worldcall. IPTV (previously covered here) by PTCL is branded as Smart TV, is all digital and has some interesting features such as Time Shifted Television (TSTV), Search, Electronic Program Guide and Video on demand but these are not exclusive to IPTV.
With regard to prices the smart TV service by PTCL is free till June of 2009. Note that the Smart TV is part of the PTCL Smart Package which bundles TV and broadband (phone line charges are additional). The one-time cost for the set top box is either Rs. 9995 or Rs. 500 per month for 2 years. The monthly cost is Rs. 1500-5300 depending on the broadband package you select. Get more info directly from PTCL’s Customer services at 0800-80-800.
Providing Free Smart TV Services to PTCL Customer till June, 2009 in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The free Smart TV includes the following;
* Free BTV Channels
* Free VODs
* Free Set Top Box
* Usual Broadband charges will apply
With a single bill for all three services (phone, dsl and tv), it can be a convenient feature for many families. PTCL has announced that soon it will expand the service to other cities as well. With its broad coverage, many households will have no other choice but PTCL and will be more likely to take the triple play package. However, we at TelecomPk.net feel that Ptcl’s marketing is not effective as their competitors. Even the website design for Smart TV is not that easy to use for people on dial up connections.

Cable TV is a service that can be viewed by hooking a cable in TV sets. Customers can only surf the channels without any control over the content. However in case of SMART TV, customers can enjoy a number of interactive services using Electronic Program Guide (EPG). Moreover in case of cable TV each new customer is added on the same loop thus compromising quality, however in case of SMART TV each subscriber has a dedicated link ensuring matchless quality of service (QoS).

I totally agree with Mr.Muhammad Khirad Alam. Really loved your post/reply……I do not know what people want…..they want everything to change in seconds……give them a chance….it is the first time such a thing is being introduced in Pakistan and I was really surprised when I heard about it. Smart TV is not as simple as cable TV…..I still dont have Smart TV but I soon plan to get it…as I think Cable TV is only crap……let me tell u something that recently I have returned from US ( lived there for 3 years) had a similar service at home of smart TV by Comcast (www.comcast.com)……switching channels took 1-2 seconds even on that service which I think has been running for atleast 5-6 years in USA…….give PTCL a chance….and some time…..the service will improve…..please criticize positively not in a negative manner……and my advice is switch to FIBER OPTIC….because that is the future…..yes the problems will come but they will vanish after some time….
and about the Indian Channels…..hats off to PTCL….im getting Smart TV I really really hate those indian channels
Hello,
when PTCLsmart TV service be introduced in Jehlum?
Dear All
I am using PTCL smart TV since Oct 2008. At the time of installation, they changed Shiro Modem with Huawei Modem which, I suppose, is very good in performance. After the replacement of modem, I felt a better speed in browsing also. I just want to bring in knowledge of those who want to apply for Smart TV. When your request will reach your exchange, the DSL people will withdraw it by themselves taking the advantage of term “technical difficulty”. Same was happened with me. I then talked to DSL officer of my area over phone and later he agreed not to withdraw next time. So, I applied again on 1236 and got the connection. Further, I will comment about it that service is very good. There are about 102 channels. Of course switching is not as fast as in other systems but there is a valid technical reason for that. When you change the channel, your request goes to Smart TV server through internet and from there video stream is changed while in other systems, all channels exist in your own room. So to take some more time is genuine reason and of course bearable.
Secondly, it is very important that you should clean your telephone line copper wire (black wire from pole) with some emery paper to remove the corrosion and then connect it in junction box, provided by PTCL. From that junction box connection goes to splitter.
I want to tell all my friends that in India, Pakistani channels are banned. So, we should react in same way and should be patriotic. I will request PTCL to put ban on all Indian channels which are shown in Smart TV. These are disturbing our Islamic and cultural values as our young generation is soon impressed with the glamour of Indian channels, which actually does not exist in India. I am frequent traveller of Bharat.
I hope all of you will agree with me to put ban on Bharati channels.
there is no indian chennel in ptcl smart tv like star plus zee tv zoom star one satmax etc

I AM USING SMART TV BUT THERE IS TWO PROBLEMS IN THE SYSTEM
ONE THING IS IF U SCHANGE THE CHANEL THAT WORKS SLOW AS COMPARE TO CABLE TV AND SECOND IS THAT HERE IS FAVORITE CHANEL LIKE STAR PLUS ,STAR ONE , ZEE TV ,SONY, AND 9XN WHICH IS MOST DEMANDING AND FAVORITE CHANEL FOR PEOPLE BUT PTCL HAVE NOT THESE CHANELS KINDLY ARRANGE THESE CHANNELS.
THANK YOU
NOMAN
PLZ AAP MUJHEI YEI BATA SKTEI HAI SMART TV MEIN CHANNEL AVAIABLE HON GAI AUR KON SEI COUNTRY KAI. IS KI SERVISE GUJRANWALA MEIN BHI AYEI GI KAI NAHI.]
plz mujh ko samart tv kay channels kay naam mil sakty hay or kia english channels bhi hay is may india kay bhi?
I am using ptcl smart T.V ,this is a good offer by ptcl but there are most of Pakistani channels.ZEE T.V,SONY T.V STAR ONE ,and many other channels which are seen on the cable net work are fauorite of the people, not showing by the ptcl SMART T.V.If ptcl show these channels there will be a different result. I hope that Ptcl higher official will look into the matter.thanks Abdul Habib.
PTCL charged me the amount of full month while I had Broadband connection for half of the month. After complaining to 1236 I was advised to visit concerned Azizabad Telephone Exchange where they advised me to visit their Clifton Office for adjustment of my Bill of Jan. 2009. What a pity and it can only happen in Pakistan where there are consumer complaint centers and courts.
Today I visited Azizabad Telephone Exchange and they admitted that they have issue with Fibre Optic connections and unable to provide Smart TV in certain areas. In fact they don’t have expertise. I advise people to stick with their old copper connections and don’t let PTCL to change it to Fibre Optic because doing so they claim their advancement by saying that they have switched a large number of connections to Fibre Optic but fact of the matter is that they have failed to resolve issues concerning to Fibre Optic Technology.
I am among those who believe that one cannot really trust PTCL and they are loosing huge revenue because of their inefficient management. My application # 20902080440273 dated 08.02.2009 for Smart TV has been withdrawn by Azizabad Telephone Exchange themselves exactly after 10 days when they were supposed to install Smart TV at my residence. I was really anguished when I came to know about this development only when I called 1236 to inquire about the status of my application but nobody from exchange bothered to inform me. Technical Issue has been a common term of PTCL and I am hearing this word since the day I am using PTCL Broadband. It looks that they have failed to handle a large numbers of applications and refusing them on technical grounds just to gain some time. I must add here that nobody told me about any expected technical issue at the time of booking nor they have mentioned any such thing on their website.
this is not fair ok yar hum na to suna tha ke ptcl ke DSL pa tv dil kul free ho ga.or ab pasie mang rahe ha sorry i dont wan it. beyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy……..
It feels like PTCL wants to have all its fingers in too many pies! :)

No doubt PTCL is a beast and it is investing on its infrastructure immensly, a rough estimate a project worth almost 40 million Rs is near completion this money is being used to upgrade all its customer service centers and develop new one stop shops. The smell of an organization which has been in government control since its start will not go away in a few years and it will take time.
Why should PTCL stop hoping aroung into different product categories? this is the current way of the market where new technology is floating in the market at a fast pace and whatever company adapts it in the most efficent manner wins, the question is not whether to HOP or NOT HOP but infact it is about how carefully you HOP and how well do you plan your HOPS.
ptcl is one confused beast, its not an entertainment company, its a telecommunications company. Small companies can jump around different business areas as they’re agile due to their size, ptcl on the other hand is a titanic, it’ll hit the ice berg even if it spots it 2 miles away!
My advise to the CEO of ptcl: focus on your key strength areas and stop hoping around into other verticals as you’ll fail miserably. And when you get the time, work on customer service and upgrade your offices so they dont look like neglected government offices
I really dont think it is worth in comparison with other cable operators. no doubt the quality is good but it is slow in channel switching, gives some protocol error at start up and most importantly does not offer full spectrum of channels.
