PTCL Broadband on the Go: EVDO Soft Launch
We have been discussing the competitive landscape of always on wireless broadband in Pakistan. PTCL has entered this lucrative area with a soft launch of personal broadband wireless service using cdma EVDO technology. Service currently available in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Mirpur.
For customers, its the performance which matters and PTCL is claiming up to 500 to 1,000 Kbps but in reality average speeds are likely to vary from 300Kbps to 700Kbps for downlink and 200 Kbps to 400Kbps for uplink. Here’s a summary of the rates.
Package 1 (no CPE cost) – Unlimited access:
Monthly service charge: Rs.2500 (first year) and Rs. 2000 from second year onwards.
No initial charges required and the charges will be billed with PTCL landline bill.Package 2 – Unlimited access:
Initial CPE charge : Rs.4000
Monthly service charges : Rs.2000 for unlimited access
Monthly service charges will be billed with PTCL landline bill.
PTCL provides EvDO PCMCIA cards. You need a laptop with PCMCIA slot. EVDO Rev.A offers up to 3.1 Mbps downlink and up to 1.8Mbps uplink. Average speeds vary from 300Kbps to 700Kbps for downlink and 200 Kbps to 400Kbps for uplink. However it varies depending on the physical situation of the user and the network at a particular time.
Beside the initial coverage in the cities described above, consumers can also use internet in other big cities as well where there is 1900MHz network but on dialup speed (153Kbps). PTCL provides a very large coverage area where you can stay connected.
The broadband speed depends on how far you are from CDMA BTS. Either with EVDO network or CDMA 1x, you will get very good speeds if the tower is within 2 – 3 KMs radius

I am using worldCall evdo with 1Mb connection and quite happy with it.
people suffring for for speed due to signal proglems , now ptcl working on it , in some days , it will be give you a full speed. inshallah. best wishes for all, i am hapy withit , 200 to 300 kbps , slam to all

PTCL EVDO giving high speed working well may be speed problem in some areas coz of signals.

I m using EVDO broadband for almost 20 to 25 days. I am really disappointed after using that USB. I think it will works well because they are showing 3.1 Mbps. First i think it was a 3MB connection and i rush to PTCL office to buy that but i realize that it ia fraud because the ‘b’ in 3.1Mbps stands for bit not byte…… Iy costs me 8000 which goes all in wain…. because youtube videos and downloading in really bad as compared to others…..

Speed of Ptcl Evdo. They said that Speed is equal to 1MB Broad Brand but maximum downloading speed came 35KB/sec only one time. Now speed is coming 17 to 20KB/sec. I called on help line but no operator and no help.

Was getting 60 KB/s yesterday now up to 80 KB/s but it is averaging 60 – 80 KB/s i would stick to DSL. Not worth the money and yes zeeshan is right youtube videos keep buffering.

salaam to all well i read many comments regarding to the performance of ptcl nd wateen telecom..i thnk both of them stand gd in different criteria.ptcl is no doubt much cheaper then wateen nd gv ful freedom,while wateen provides consistant speed..bt poor packages..i myself iz a user of ptcl 4 mb package.downloading speed is excellent..as far as ptcl on the go is concerned it works better in islamabad,bt nt as efficent as it is mentioned by providerz..bt its nw in testing phase..hope it wil be work better,currently speed varies frm 120 to 250..bt hope so it wil b more gd..bt in my opinion PTCL IS BEST….thnx best regards..Nabeel

Simple to install and use.
For the test I download 13MB in 8sec.
I made an DIY antenna for EVDO pcmcia CARD. Currenlty getting 180Kilo Bytes / Sec Consistant speed.
Long Test Varries. 165 KB/Sec to 190 KB/Sec
Antenna design USing a Hard Electric Copper Wire Surrouding the antenna goes up to 8 Inches…U need to try different Angle.
M A Hameed you are a person who is in personal agitation with PTCL, wateen and all other companies are in a loot, they have anticipated our nation as a TOTA Downloader, and they are as if they are serving ignorant ppl, PTCL Users are all those who have got tired from all other companies, who are looting us, PTCL broadband is simply outclass, service problems are natural, even if you categorize wateen then see the details below,
a person who wants to sell his wateen connection gets no customer.
a person trying to connect to wateen help line is never cooperated.
no one can roll back from his/her connection as wateen are BADMASH ppl, and use force of words to wage a verbal war.
too much expensive.
wateen has a lot of limitations.
lot of hidden charges.
end of the day you pay 5 times than that of PTCL.
PTCL EVDO is some thing new to try: Believe me i have downloaded a lot of reserach papers and codes at 300 Kbps. you know 300 can you imagine it on wateen/ khawateen/ yateem/ gutter telecom??????
please join hands to save pakistans telecom company with best provisions all over. ptcl is a semi govt co. and govt is getting 75 % of the profit from it..

Hi all,
I just got the USB version of PTCL Evdo. its been a few hours. It speed is around 120kilo bytes per second. Although thats not expected but given the mobility and availablity when power goes off. I happily take that.

300Kbps to 700Kbps <– what that mean acutally? i guess your download speed should be arround 300 to 400KB for 3.1mbps is it? if i m right then for now broadband on go sucks, i m getting only 30KB from past few days , it was good before a week i was getting about 200KB whatever i m keeping this for some reason that it is wireless and it can be used in any part of city .. so yeah thatz advantege of it and i think ptcl should improve this and it will work fine for users.
Great comments. Thanks for sharing the performance. Not being in one of the metropolises atm, i guess CPE thing would work but its definitely better than capped wateen. Price is still high but i guess it’d go down like all others. How soon would it cover other cities depends on the crappy ptcl customer service but one day it will like wired dsl. DSL itself is inconsistent sometimes but i guess you won’t miss it in summers, guess you all know why. :)
The product is absolutely great, Wateen WiMAx , GPRS or Edge is no match with speed & performance of PTCL EVDO service. You just have to use the service to get the real feeling of wireless broadband
PTCL Customer Service:
i have been using ptcl on-the-go EV-DO with pcmcia cpe since Jan 09 using my laptop. recently i changed my laptop, the new one doesn’t include pcmcia slot (i was bound to choose 1 model only), hence i’m left with my dsl internet usage only. Back in Jan, i learnt from ptcl that usb EV-DO will be launched in 1 to 2 months time. The same aspect was in my mind while choosing laptop that i’ll get usb ev-do in a months time but its been 2 months now and still there are no chances (seemingly) ptcl launching usb ev-do.
Performance:
On-the-go pcmcia EV-DO performance has not been consistent, theoratically, it should have been downloading at speeds over 350 kbps with Rev A, but i had max download speeds 200 kbps while average speed remained 120 kbps with low speeds of 30-50 kbps often met as well.
User Friendly:
Installation and connection making, on the othr hand, is too user friendly, the best i would say
The only thing i’m being worried is,
Quantity is another thing while quality is another thing, So what do you think can the PTCL maintain the industry’s best quality standards ?
I think PTCL is delaying the official launch because either they are not preapred (technicaly) or may be because of the fact that due to current economy termoil they won’t be able to grab sufficient number of customers as poeple are not spending a single peny on other then necesities.Wait and See

Q1. I want to know 30% student discount also apply on PTCL EVDO…for example Rs.2000 – (30% Rs.600 ) = Rs. 1400..?
Q2. Rs.2000 is including all taxes like 15% GST or i have to pay GST extra like Rs. 2000 (15% Rs.300) = Rs.2300..?
Q3. USB device have any warrenty, if device is broken or stolen or any circuit damage ? can i get new device at free of cost/ or low cost or i have to pay full amount of device get new device again from ptcl.
Q4. Can i get atleat 60kb per second downloading in peak hours with PTCL EVDO?
Q5. Is there any low amount packages for home users like Rs.1000 per month in PTCL EVDO Tarrif is lauching in near future?

PTCL is still not clear about providing their EVDO Service. Whenever I call 1236 from landline, staff says that service is launched but when I go to PTCL One Stop Shop(LPJ Road, Westridge), they say 1236 is misguiding us and that service is still not launched in Rawalpindi. Now, both of them are giving are completely making me out of mind.
I have been user of both wateen and ptcl broadband services and come to conclusion that each have its own advantages.
You talk about speed, ptcl in some areas give excellent speed and where as in other areas the speed is not up to mark, same goes with wateen.
You talk about outage, I see wateen going out of service more frequently than ptcl in normal days but in cases where we have nationwide outage like breakage of undersea cables ptcl suffers more than wateen.
As far as the costs are concerned the only place where wateen gets expensive is CPE cost where as ptcl gives away that for free!
About EVDO from PTCL, we still can not be sure till it makes a commercail launch and users give its feedback.
ptcl give one of the best service in town. wateen wimax sucks…in rush areas no network.too much expensive…1mbps for 700 with 4 gb cap..i download 8gb everyday from ptcl 1mpbs connection..how do i afford some bulshit connection like wateen
PTC has already caused immense harm to its image by offering packages and then withdrawing them suddenly. The same applies to its rates.
Secondly, Wateen WiMax offers one MB for Rs 799. It does have CPE charges but that will be covered in a few months. How can PTC can compete? Specially with its terrible service.
Finally, PTC is still seems to be run by unthinking bureaucrats. It does not realize that “Limited” is a classification of the company and cannot be a part of the initials. (It should be just PTC, not PTCL.)
