The End Of BrainTel LDI – You Will Be Missed
BrainTel LDI license has been suspended by PTA. Is this the final chapter in the short but adventurous life of the famous 210-nnnn series?
A few years ago someone in Lahore showed me how they could dial a local number (210-nnnn) from Lahore and connect directly to U.S. After a bit of investigation I also signed up for the service. It wasn’t a very consistent or reliable service but having a local number was very convenient. And when it worked, the VOIP technology was absolutely wonderful and very affordable. Soon this service came under the radar and many times it came to the brink of being closed. This time it seems that it is gone for good. It was fun while it lasted.
The dispute between PTA and Braintel (as described in the pdf document) can be the topic of many posts and shows the internal strifes of the LDI industry. Braintel has some bitter complaints agains the ‘cartel’ and how the price of calls to Pakistan are set up.
Here’s one excerpt which shows the point of view of “The Authority”.
The Authority, through the Traffic Monitoring Facility installed for the purpose, noted that (i) it has during the period from 14th May, 2008 to 30th June, 2008, unauthorizedly originated 450,814 international telephony minutes (accounting for 65,482 international telephony calls) and terminated those minutes in different countries through IP address 119.63.130.98 by using SIP over non-standard port 8891 (ii) from 14th May, 2008 to 30th June, 2008 it has also unauthorizedly terminated 2,442,779 international telephony minutes (accounting for 339,917 international telephony calls) in Pakistan through IP address 119.63.130.98 by using SIP over non-standard port 8891 and (iii) the licensee has been using its locally allocated numbers for the Lahore Region (N/S) outside Pakistan by misusing Direct Inward Dialing technique and by mapping its numbers against IP addresses, hence, these numbers are being used globally and more than 50,000 customers of the licencee are using
these numbers in around 77 countries.

Braintel is back in Business. Now you can receive Incoming calls on the old 210nnnn. For out going calls there are two options.
Either direct dialing 0092nnnnnnnn Rs. 8 /min or
Call back service 042nnnnnnn.
Inform your friends and family in Pakistan to call on your braintel number using wateen’s prepaid calling card and they will be charged 1.25 rupee per minute including tax which I believe is still a good option. Voice quality is good from Lahore by using wateen card but not as good from Karachi
Riz
Braintel was a good service and I am sure Pakistan was getting a good amount of revenue from Service. Hopefully The service will restore soon,
I am still using Braintel service for incoming calls only. My family calls me on a daily basis and they are charged approx PKRS 2.5/minute.
Initially when Braintel had started this UK number facility, then I could make calls but now I can’t. Only can receive. Voice clarity is still good as I’m using LINKSYS device which I bought from Braintel office.
Anyhow, its still a cheap medium of communication with family in Pakistan from Gulf.
AOA, I HAVE REQUEST FOR ALL MEMBERS OF BRAINTEL, WHEN BRAINTEL SERVICE IS OPNE PLZ SENT ONE E-MAIL TOO ME. CUZ I DONT HAVE TIME TOO CHECK EVERYDAY MEANS BRAIN TEL OPNE OR NOT. THIS IS MAY EMAIL ID. shahbazqkhan@yahoo.com.
THANKS IN ADVANC
SHAHBAZ KHAN
i mis brain tell servis i think pta md riswat hor i requst brain tell md pleas dont give any riswat inshalla alla sab thik kr den gy sb brain custmr ki dua app ke sath he
I think PTA is an agent of Indian voip companies in pakistan.
According to Braintel’s Manager Mr. Abdali the service will restore after 24th March 2009. I wish that it restore on 24th March. Its working within Lahore now but we overseas can’t use it.
Here I would like to mention that the problem happened with Braintel bcz of Punjab Governor Salaman Taseer (The cheapest Person in Punjab). Now as
Sharif Bros are back so I hope InshAllah the Braintel’s problem will be solved.
Here a rughly figer which country lossing bcz of the Blody PTA, if braintel having 50,000 user overseas & if they use braintel aprox Rs 2000 per month it means Braintel is deducting money from there credit cards worth to Rs 100,000,000.00
(US$ 1,250,000.00) which is coming in shape of diff forgin curncies. I think PTA & Govt of Pakistan should see this figures & should encourage braintel to increase its users.
According to PTA braintel has transferred calls to pakistan illegaly, I want to ask the question from that idiots if we use any VOIP (Globe7, Skype, Net2phone, Phoneserve etc) service overseas then why PTA is allowing that VOIP to conact the call to Pakistan? Simply they can’t do any thing for that big companies, they can just bark on Pakistani companies.
If PTA is not willing to allow braintel then why the hell they don’t start IP phone by PTCL which is govt supported organization.
Lets Pray that Allah give success to Braitel against PTA so we can stay conected with our families.
Yeah, I agreed. I aand my some friends are using VTALKERS services and its going well so far. Try it.
Dear Brain Tel Users,
Brain Tel services were suspended on 17th February, 2009 consequent to passing of determination order by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority against Brain Telecommunication Ltd.
This PTA determination order dated 17th February 2009 for the suspension of Brain Tel license can be downloaded from following PTA web site:
http://www.pta.gov.pk/media/det_brain_170209.pdf
An appeal was immediately filed against above determination order before the Honorable Islamabad High Court which was fixed for hearing on 6th March 2009, which can be downloaded from following site:
http://www.brain.net.pk/pta/AppealAgainstDetOrder170209.pdf
On this date of hearing i.e., 6th March 2009 the Honorable Islamabad High Court was pleased to set aside PTA determination order dated 17th February 2009 and has remanded the matter to PTA for deciding it afreash.
The Court order can be downloaded from following web site:
http://www.brain.net.pk/pta/CourtOrder6March2009.JPG
As a consequence of order dated 6th March 2009; PTA is in the process of issuing directions to relevant LDI operators to restore our services and Brain Tel telecom services are expected to be restored very soon. Inshallah.
Brain Tel is waiving off number retention charges from 17th February 2009 to 28th February 2009 in February 2009 billing, in terms of fairness.
Since the matter was a consequence of PTA orders, hence the service unavailability was un-avoidable, however do accept our apology for the inconvenience caused.
Dear,
PTA people are simply bull shit. They are realy mother fucker.
PTCL wants that foriegn transaction coming to Pakistan must go to other country as they want to stop income for Pakistani communication .They are enemy of country not friends they want stop incom of pakistan as overseas pakistanis use this for call to thier country .
They will use other option of VOIP
They are not able to provide service no they want to stop cricket ,telecomunication and everything in pakisatn . Every way of incom for pakistan
Best luck PAk Govt Policy keep serving this way stop incom of pakistan and send it o
i hate those who stops good thing because of the thinking ” whats in it for me “
and i also say to the responsible of bahrain telecom. i m resently completing my BS telecommunication degree i have one year experience in multinet pakistan(pvt) in O&M section network engr so if u do some thing for me.i must do many more for your orgnaization best wishes thanx E-mail: haseeb_ahmar@yahoo.com
I agree with Mr. Nadeem Altaf. If PTA will not allow BrainTel, then we will use other VoiP services & the revenue was coming to Pakistan via BrainTel will be stopped. If PTA can generate BrainTel Users List & Data, then they also can generate Revenue incoming because of BrainTel. After all .. all Govt. Departments are working for Pakistan. They should appreciate BrainTel instead of blocking them.
These Govt. Departments in Pakistan Specially these days during Zardari PPP “Dark Night” Govt. don’t let people move straight forward. Just because of such F*****g politics, People like to move & use wrong & Shorts ways.
Hail Zardar & PTA. Hail Foolish People, Hail Black Nights in Pakistan of PPP
i hate those who stops good thing because of the thinking ” whats in it for me “
This is not right, if Brain Tel was doing some thing that is not wrong, they should be allowed to continue. Govt should consider the following
Revenue is coming in the country, now we living abroad will pay foreign companies.
Govt should provide VOIP service if they want to ban some thing like this. It was such a convinience.
Sad is all I can say …
Nadeem
Hi,
Be realistic. If braintel is palying game with GOV. then they must be penalized. On other hand our Gov. must legalized this business and get benefited.
PTA must consider those 50,000 families (braintel users) who are working abroad and supporting country by sending remittance. Just consider that all these families living abroad and paying money to a local company for their phone calls. By this our country is benefited and we are saving our money.
I would request to PTA to resolve this issue soon in the interst of Pakistan and Overseas Pakistanis.
Its Money Game, May be PTA head has empty pocket, So may need some money for his Wife expense…….Hahahahah Assholes world

Well well well Govt. has played it has to … Well not be mentioned who who else need money in his pocket … PTA is #1 in it. Well between this case the only fault of Brain is that it had no LDI license and that is actually no problem for them in getting. if brain has got it it would be very easy for them to recover it also as they are the actual sole who initiated this service for ease of people and earn.
For the second side I have been following a lot on PTA and not to be mentioned PTA is not accepting needs of new era and Well it is still in hand of people who still at times say Computer is waste of time ….
Its Habit of our Governments that at first they urge Overseas Pakistanis to invest in Pakistan and when we do they betray us and thats what they did with Braintel. All they want is their share of Money in this business where is PTA when Mobilink counts 50seconds as 1 minut.
@Tech Turtle – agreed, this was a service with an expiry date on it from the start.
I am afraid that ordinary people’s concerns are not about to be heard any time soon. We can create some noise but thats about it.

Govt need money Zardari looking for his percentage
I think Zardari is looking for money and braintel is not giving that to him
You are right5 Babar, it doesn’t matter to people whether the Govt. is being ripped off or losing money, all everyone cares about how they can benefit from it personally.
I think the service should have been made legal by GoP and additional revenue streams could have been opened from it. Well, all I can say is that the GoP does not realize the potential of VoIP, all it cares about is their own pride and joy PTCL’s profit margins.
On the other hand, Brain was at fault from start. They exactly knew what the sole purpose of their service was and they benefited from it.
Lastly, 2 wrongs does not make it one right so there has to be a concrete legislation for VoIP services as unless it is made accessible to the people, these kind of shady businesses will keep on popping up.
@Junaid – right, but for a large number of users, that is a technical detail … all they care about is a good/cheap service.
I m Against the PTA decision. Braintel is providing the services in very cheap rates. Even the PTCL and Other operators are charging high rates. This is best and easy way that every pakistani can use this service for the contact of their families.
PTA has objected that why braintel is providing the low call cheap rates.
I condem the act of PTA. I was using very cheap service of BrainTeL in so ecnomical manner. It was the only to connect me with my sweet home as well as home land.
