PTCL EVO: The Way Wireless Broadband Should Be
For Rs.2000 per month you can have blazing fast Internet on the go from PTCL EVO service. There’s a one time cost of Rs 6000 (USB) or Rs 4000 (PCMCIA card) . If you have a land line you pay the broadband charges with the land line bill, otherwise pay at PTCL One Stop Shops or Customer Service Centers. Limited availability for the broadband speeds – Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi – for now. But the lower speed CDMA version is available in other areas. Here’s what PTCL says:
You can use this service in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi & Mirpur for broadband while traveling. Your Evdo automatically switches to 1 X in non Evdo Coverage areas. Which means you can also use internet everywhere in Pakistan where there is Vfone 1900MHz network. Please note that in non Evdo coverage areas your internet will be connected on lower speed (153Kbps). PTCL provides a very large coverage area where you can stay connected.

As usual the service has been getting reviews ranging from great to average. But overall I think PTCL has a winner with EVO, if they can sustain the performance and service.

I got a sleek looking, black EV-DO wireless USB dongle with an extensible antenna, that happens to go perfectly with my T60. The dongle has a built USB storage, so all I had to do was plug it in and the setup program started… from the dongle itself! Pretty cool. It took me about 5 minutes to run through the install, and boom! I was in business. My first stop was google.com, which loaded instantly. I could already see the difference in performance but I decided to measure it a little more objectively. Speedtest.net is always handy for that.

I have connection of wateen as well.I took USB of my friend just to check which one is better.My area is actually out of coverage area for wateen.It some times work and some time dont work.But PTCL wireless is still working better than that of wateen 1mbs, but not to the extent they claims.So be careful while deciding because iam also still confused what to do.

You are rite… ptcl is just bluffing people.They are not giving that much speed.unfortunately i had purchased Evo today from gujrat but its speed is wrost then Dialup.
i will try 2 days more if the speed remains the same then i will return it back to Ptcl and get back my Rs. 4000 bcz it is clearly written that if you are not satisfied you can return back and your money will be refunded but within 7 Days only… So i have 7 days so i could easily return it back…
But this is not enough we have to keep complaining on PTA website so that they take action and tell the people that what bluff ptcl playing on Pakistani people to earn money and give them highly penalty….

17 rs would be firstly covered when you add a new balance card of 1 hundred to your fone , then 21 person tax of gov will also be applied to you, i mean all of us. we poor basterds. and thats why we get nothing but only 62 rs.
EVO has proved to be extremely disappointing. All those tall claims about 3.1 Mbps are totally false. The speed of EVO is nowhere near any of the DSL connections available. The speed most of the time is slightly faster than the normal dial up wireless connection. Even ordinary broadband DSL can play YouTube broadcasts smoothly. But I so far never have been lucky enough to get YouTube broadcasts without several interruptions for buffering. I preferred PTCL over all other wireless broadband suppliers only in the hope they would be the best. It’s sad that so far it has not measured up to our expectations at all.

Hi Im using DSL BROADBAND 1mb for last 4 months the speed was 230 to 270kb/sec but now its giving me maximum 150kb/sec when i called ptcl y is that so they told me that they were giving me 2mb by mistaken but now its 1mb so they said sorry but im so upset cuz i was addicted to that speed now im getting less speed instead of more wot a crap i jst hate PTCL they shud change 1mb package to 2mb package in cumin january 2010 INSHALLAH

PTCL Evo wireless is a load of bull shit….Do not buy it its very expensive and does not give 3Mbps speed as falsely claimed by PTCL. Govt. of Pakistan and P.T.A should take strict action against PTCL for fooling the public and giving them quality less service at very expensive prices.

If someone is ready to buy a wireless usb connection so dont ever buy of PTCL! It is one of the worst broadband internet connection. I have taken its test drive in ptcl gulshan office and when downloading a setup from Microsoft website, it downloades with the speed of 45 -60 kbps. Can you believe it?
They call it 3G Wireless Broadband which they say its a 3.1 MBps connection. Its just a shit!
3.1 Mbps means that a user should get at least 200-300kbps!
Therefore its a flop invention of PTCL!!
PTCL DSL Broadband is far more better than it!
WorldCall in wireless is much bore better than PTCL. On a 256Kbps connection it gives 30kbps

First of all The speed PTCL is giving 3.1MB/S is just a connectivity speed … Worldcall EV-DO is also connecting on 3.1MB/S its doesn’t mean Worldcall is giving 3MB package !!! :)
i am using 1MB EV-DO of worldcall … and i am getting the downlkoading speed abt 1.8 MB/S which is more then any thing !!
I think worldcall EV-DO is the best option …. 3000 Activation Charges Which is refundable …. and you can chose ur choice from 3 packages …. 256…1200, 512….1800, 1MB…..2500, now its working in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot and other 50 cities working on CDMA just as PTCL EVO so why should we pay 6000 for the EVO and 2000 per month … Feel The difference …. :)
hi all. the real thing is the speed, actually recently i was in u.a.e they are providing HSPDA 7.2 MBPS, i have bought for 1 hour for Dhs 10. and the download speed was 400 KBps accurate,not a point high or low. totall speed is divided due to server and another problem is the signals. i suggest you to go for ZONG sub keh do, it is giving me maximum 52KB/s to 20KB/s. and and and affordable rates, 2GB for Rs.200 , 4GB Rs 400, and unlimited for Rs.900

PTCL claims two things about its EVDO Wireless Broadband device.
1) Its a 3.1 Mbps connection. Its not. Its just that the device can handle a maximum of 3.1Mbps data transfer rate. Same is the case with worldCALL’s wireless broadband.
Now the question is that how much data transfer speed is PTCL giving to its subscribers?
I personally think it varies from person to person. Because we have been using some 16 PTCL EVDO devices and 12 WorldCALL EVDO devices for last 3 months. Even with good/full signals, at exactly the same location, the data speed varies for each user. And we have concluded that different devices are set on different default speeds ranging between 256kbps to 1Mbps. Which is a shame, since PTCL can give better speed (upto 4Mbps) but if its not, it should NOT think that consumers are stupid.
2) PTCL claims a download (DL) speed of 300-500Kbps on average. We can’t complain about that now. Since we get an average of 750Kbps on some of our devices. But here again PTCL & worldCALL is minting cash from poor innocent people who don’t understand the difference between a bit & a Byte.
In terms of DL, the standard unit used is Kilo Byte (KB) and not Kilo Bit (Kb).
1 KiloByte(KB) = 8 KiloBits(Kb)
However .. the Internet speeds that everyone is offering is always in Bits and never Bytes. So, what PTCL is actually offering in terms of Bytes on average is:
Considering the maximum PTCL claims on its website i.e. 500Kbps:
500/8 = 62.5KBps (kilo Bytes per second)
We get an average DL speed of 75KBps = 600Kbps. So technically we cant complain. Can we now? :o) Its a good 250kbps faster than what they claim to deliver.
This is definitely not for people who work mostly at one place. But if you need to be online at 2 or 3 or more places in a day then its for you since its for people who require mobility more than blazing download speeds.
Synopsis:
Even though it offers mobility, the speed should be in excess 1500kbps (kilo bit) at least to qualify to be called a decent Internet connection. At current speed, the monthly charges shouldn’t be in excess of Rs.1000/-. The device should not be more than Rs.2000-2500. Thats what the ZTE device costs.
PTCL is offering EVDO to Govt. employs @ Rs. 1000/month already. (Device goes a lot cheaper too)
They are also offering a monthly subscription of Rs.2500/- to PTCL land-line subscribers. Which has the usual Rs.2000/month for the Internet and Rs.500 is charged every month for a year as device installments.
PTCL has weird billing issues. And if you go talk to them, they accept that the problem is their fault. But they very politely tell you that they can’t do anything about it. :o) I call that good manners. :o)
As far as the Internet speed & monthly subscription is concerned, PTCL is way better than WorldCALL’s wireless device.
I am saying that because we have been using both for 3 months now.

i think if PTCL offer it in 100 per month and give EVO USB free then may be some one use who have not any connection before or using dial up yet think that he might get ride of disconnection and local call charges per connect
I just buy ptcl EVO 3.1Mbps last month July 18th i already used before Wateen WiMax and Worldcall Evdo they all make fool all people now i have Ptcl EVO 3.1 Mbps there on website also help center say maximum or Average download speeds from 300 kbps to 500 kbps! but that time i buy till now today 10 August i never seen more than 150 or 175kbps its most of time 96kbps or 125kbps even i check it morning , after noon and evening its same now let see whats wrong there how can they gives us 500kbps even that account only 3.1Mbps they cant able to gives us more than 250kbps or 300kbps downloading speed they write on web page lie and total wrong they just try to make fool if you have 1Mbps account then maximum downloading speed 100kbps or if u have 2Mbps then maximum downloading speed 200kbps. How can Ptcl Evo 3.1Mbps gives us 500kbps i smile lot coz i also did not think before buy that but i know that time they lie i just buy after think that latest maybe they will gives me 250kbps or 300kbps but not now they juts 125kbps. Here in our Wonderful Country all company invest money for IT and Cell phone services all just take money they did not gives us return. They are much danger than robbers because robber show us guns and get amount and that companies make fool and play with us and got amount its a cheating. Wateen , Worldcall now its time Ptcl Evo i got so bad experience here. Did any one think how much we are poor and backward to other countries ?? Japan , China , Singapore , Uk , Canada , Turky and many more they have more than 4Mbps account for home user and 4Mbps means 4Mbps unlike Ptcl Evo say some and gives different. I purchaesd EVO yesterday and extremently disappointed. Download speed I am getting is max upto 12 KBPS and even normal sits dont open properly. VPTCL goes upto 16 KBPS downlaod.So whats the fun to use this expensive devise with lower quality.
Speed fluctuation is extrme even in Islamabad.
I recommend take a DEMO at your home before purchase this socalled 3.1 MBPS wireless connection.
It might work good in some specific areas.

I just bought EVO yesterday.. after one day of use..
I conclude.. PTCL service is just as lame as it can be..
I got maximum 212Kb/s which like stayed for few seconds,
huge fluctuations about 40 – 100kb/s which sometimes like cause total net disconnect..
I was using WorldCall EvDo 256 which I think comparatively does it job quite well instead of the hyped 3.1Mb/s thing.. :(
I would be refunding my evo in no time soon, it would take some more time for ptcl to work out the speed fluctuations.

DONE GET STUCK in 3MBPS hype , speed is as slow as 512 kbps connection , even getting full speed the result was same as poor LAN internet , m not just saying i tested on speedtest.com

I have experienced the ptcl EVo device speed. Mobilink WiMax 1mbps is much faster than any other internet including EVO and it’s monthly charges are only Rs. 1000. I’ve used it and it’s giving 125kps to 160kps downloading speed and internet connection is smooth.

HI, I just got the EVO Device. Sitting in the office and it is not moving.
I am getting paltry 2.5 Kbps download. I tried it at home, at some places it went upto 50 Kbps. I tried it at PTCL office and it gave me upto 200 Kbps. So result is that you should buy this device and open your office right in the PTCL office for it to work. :-)
I think I am going to return this device.

EVDO is extremely good in providing fastest wireless internet in Pakistan but there is huge fluctuaion in speed i.e. from 0kbps to 3016kbps as far as i hav experienced.
Also i must say that there should be a student package at lower rates

Dear Khurram, 0.57 MB is more than 500k per second, the claimed speed. However, I did face problems of frequent disconnection and restart but that is perhaps due to my PC problem.

Are these monthly services chares Rs.2000/- for short duration or they are constant? This will make it bit costly. There should be waiver of this charge after period of short span.
Don’t be fool with their claimed speed. Evo is too expensive though good for those who don’t have PTCL landline for conventional broadband from the same PTCL. On the other hand WorldCall wireless brand is a deception by truth that is relatively economical at lower speed for example 256kbps for Rs. 1200 but beware the speed of WorldCall wireless is like dialup connection and their usual download speed is round 24kpbs. Be away from WorldCall wireless boradband

Can you please stop exaggerating…Right now I am using EVO in Islamabad and at 12:30 pm on June 17, 2009 I am getting 0.57 Mb/s download speed and 0.09 Mb/s upload speed (I have the screen shot in case someone wants to confirm) instead of beating drum of 3.1 Mb/s. Moreover they are expensive from any other wireless operator in terms of monthly as well as upfront charges.
