IT Tazee Reviews WorldCall EVDO Broadband Service
Here’s a review of the WorldCall EVDO Broadband Service for 3 months in Karachi, by Mohtashim of IT Tazee. His review is based on the 256kbps speed option.
A few snippets from his review:
Setup: Simple and fast. Since its USB, it self installs and starts to work.
Price : 3000 for the device, and 1200 and up for the service. Yes, home DSL is cheaper and faster, I agree but you do pay dearly for the mobility and to bypass KESC and PTCL all at once!
Speed: We got the speed promised consistently as long as we were in the Karachi metropolitan area.
Imran Zaheer added this comment from his own experience:
QoS varies greatly from area to area and time of day. The first 2 months (where I suppose user base was very low), I consistently used to get 80-140KB/sec (yes that’s a little above the rated speed limit). I suggest people considering this go with the 256 or 512 packages, and if you do a lot of inter city traveling, consider the PTCL EVDO option.

thank u…
No matter what anyone says about Worldcall’s evdo service, I just want to say that it SUCKS!! It’s unreliable, only works in some areas (at least in Khi as that’s where I’m using it and it does NOT work in Clifton near KTP underpass) and gets disconnected for no reason whatsoever every 2-3 days and stays down for almost 2-3 hours OR MORE! If anyone wants this peice of crap for a minimum of Rs. 1200/month, I suggest you should go and buy something better. At least it would be worth it. Worldcall evdo is NOT! Their servers go down frequently and when you try to connect, you get Error# 691: invalid username or password or Error# 734: the PPP (or PML-Q or something else) link control protocol was terminated and you just cannot connect for hours and hours and hours. Maybe the reviewer should’ve mentioned that as well…
AGAIN UNRELIABLE AND AT VERY EXPENSIVE MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION.
pakistan is rapidly growing when it cames to mobility in computing, however there are few hurdles & yes! government seriously needs to think about the licensing of 3G for telecoms operators.

Thanks Sir for sharing about WorldCall EVDO. No doubt it is best very good in absence of UMTS’s 3G. I don’t know why PTA is not licensing out 3G for telecom. As per my understandings, telecom companies have reservation on charges of 3G spectrum because 3G has to compete with WiMAX but as spectrum charges for WiMAX are far less and it is cheap technology so telecom companies are reluctant to get license at high rate.
But I see overall, UMTS and GSM is trying its level best to flop WiMAX technology. Intel had announced to produce WiMAX mobility chip for laptops and mobiles but yet not come in market due to GSM preferring 3G.
I’m not a IT guy but this information I took after reading different technologies and their future. May be I am wrong to some extent.
Hopefully you will write some day on 3G Vs WiMAX for many readers like me.
