International Calls To Pakistan From US – Flat Rate Calling Plans

Despite all the progress made by telecom industry and the gradual lowering of rates, it is still not that cheap to pick up the phone and call Pakistan directly from your landline or cell phone from US. Part of it has to do with the high termination rates imposed by Pakistan. In a reent trend, phone companies in US have started to offer a single rate international calling where you can buy a bucket (say 300 minutes) for a flat fee and then call one of the many countries in that plan. Vonage is one of them but Pakistan is not included in their list.

Cellular Subscribers Near 97 Million. Telenor and Mobilink Gain Most.

After a tumultuous year,  the Pakistan telecom industry is back on the road to recovery. Its good to see November 2009 show some healthy growth of about 800K new subscribers. Total cellular subscribers are 96.7 million (with ~285K for SCO and AJK). Here are the month-to-month gains with the most successful operator at the top:

A Historical View of Pakistan Telecom Industry and Its Impact on Pakistan Culture

Taimur Sikander has written an interesting article for Dawn about the long way that telecom has come in Pakistan and the impact of mobile phones and telecommunication on Pakistan society. I particularly like how he provides snapshots of the early days,  and the way politics, arts and culture were shaped by telecom.
