[Updated] BlackBerry Trouble Summary – Your Opinions?
The past few months have not been going good with RIM (research in motion), the company behind the BlackBerry phones and services. As we reported earlier the service is running into trouble with governments, here is summary of BlackBerry troubles I can recall:
UAE – The government has disputes on how RIM handles data. They have even announced a date for BlackBerry services shutdown. The major operator, Etisalat, has even announced other attractive smart phone packages.
Saudi Arabia - The government is also to ban services in the country over the rising security concerns again because of data security at RIM. The government earlier also ordered for a ban on BB IM.
India – At the neighbors the Department of Telecom is still to reach a solution on security concerns over the BB data encryption as they are not able to decipher it . They fear of it being misused for terrorist activities.
Kuwait – The authority is concerned on content restriction and emphasize on blocking of pornographic content ton BB phones.
Pakistan – At home, the authority is also concerned on content restriction after the Facebook Blasphemy issue. The service are limited since then. The BalckBerry internet browsing remains suspended on PTA’s instruction.
With all this going around, RIMs market share of 46 million subscribers worldwide is very much in threat. On the other hand this leaves room for other smart phones makers to gain in their shares, which is quite possible if giants like Etisalat promote the BlackBerry Alternative Packages.
How do you see the BlackBerry trouble story? Give you opinions/suggestions in comments below.
Saudi Arabia – The authorities have almost reached an agreement over handling the BlackBerry data, possibility involving setting up a server in the country.
I just hope PTA also follows on the line and get the dispute over the content filtering soon.
