Warid Completes 6 Years in Pakistan. Will it Stay Independent?

Warid Telecom Pakistan – a company jointly owned by Abu Dhabi & Singapore Telecommunications groups,marked its sixth year of business in Pakistan. The mobile operator entered the market on May, 23rd, 2005. It quickly became a well-known brand and showed strong growth in the initial years. I remember getting my SIM from a local Warid customer center in a bright, cheerful packaging (with English and Urdu instructions, nice!) and the customer experience was smooth and pleasant. Overall Warid has contributed positively to Pakistan’s economy by injecting investment and creating jobs.
Given the competitive landscape and tough economic conditions in Pakistan, the big question for Warid is if it can stay independent? I think we will get the answer within 12-18 months, if not sooner.

In all these years, Warid has shown solid results with vast expansion in each area. Company secured over 17.70 million subscribers while providing quality network coverage at over 6,300 destinations, 550 cities including Azad Kashmir and Northern areas of Pakistan. Company has one of the largest customer reach network with 116,000 retail outlets, 327 franchises and 19 business centers across Pakistan. Being versatile and innovative, there are over 60 Mobile VAS (Value Added Services) it offers. Covering wide International Roaming destinations, its IR services are now available in over 148 countries with GPRS roaming in 102 countries and prepaid roaming in 28 countries.
Warid has a loyal user base: it has secured the second largest postpaid subscriber base in Pakistan. Pakistan Telecommunications Authority reports Warid Telecom as the only Operator with lowest consumer complaints amongst all the operators. Amongst the numerous awards it won, Warid Pakistan recently received the Highest FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) Excellence Award.
Warid was twice nominated for Brand of the Year award and the award of ‘Mobile Operator with Best Consumer Pull in Pakistan’. Warid is actively involved in many cultural and sports activities.
