ISOC Meeting Held in Lahore
The Internet Society (ISOC) is an independent international nonprofit organisation founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet related standards, education, and policy around the world. ISOC ‘s Pakistan chapter is in the process of rejuvenation, in the continuation of same spirit, a meeting was held in Lahore on October 8.
The meeting was arranged by Mr. Fouad Bajwa, Dr Sarmad & Mr. Kashif, the later deserves a special praise as he came forward and presented CORVIT as a venue. The meeting was attended by around 15 persons which was better than expected. Mr. Fouad introduced himself and gave a comprehensive presentation regarding the mission, vision & objectives of the Internet Society & where Pakistan fits the scenario. The speaker explained the functions of ISOC, which were as follows:
- Provide leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet.
- Are the organisational home for the groups responsible for Internet infrastructure standards, including the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Architecture Board (IAB).
- Act as a global clearinghouse for Internet information and education.
- Facilitate and coordinate Internet-related initiatives around the world.
The floor was then opened for the attendees, those attending in person & through Webex introduced themselves and openly discussed the reasons for attending the meeting and their expectations from ISOC.
The overall experience of attending the meeting was great as the attendees presented different types of stakeholders and hence new ideas and comments on how to take the society forward surfaced as the comfort level gradually increased. If ISOC Lahore continue to meet in the same spirit, it can play a vital role in shaping the future of internet in Pakistan.
