Innovation Punjab Website Launched By Shahbaz Sharif
An event was held at Arfa Karim Technology Park, Lahore regarding the new Punjab Innovation Policy introduced by Punjab Govt. in collaboration with Google. Stakeholders from different parts of the society were invited to attend the event. The only unfortunate moment in the event came when the audience was asked to stand up for the Pakistani National Anthem and then remixed version of instrumental National Anthem was played, it is extremely concerning that the management of such an event failed to play the original National Anthem.
We have distributed 100,000 laptops among bright students this year and will be distributing 100,000 more in the coming year with the cost of 8 billion Rupees. Even if only 1% of these students use their laptops like these heroes have done, our effort will bear fruit.
– Mian Shahbaz Sharif
The Innovation Punjab campaign is led by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), which has been managing all the affairs of Punjab Innovation Policy on behalf of the Punjab Govt. Innovators like Ali Gul Pir, Qari Khalil, Maria Umar, Muhammad Adnan, Farrukh Zafar & Burhan Rasool were dubbed as heroes and short videos describing their stories were played. CM Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif was the Chief Guest of the event and and praised the efforts of heroes. He gave goody bags to the heroes to mark their achievements. William Fitzgerald, senior policy analyst at Google; Badar Khushnood, country consultant – Pakistan for Google; Jehan Ara, President of the Pakistan Software Houses Association and Dr. Umar Saif, Chairman PITB were also present at the event. The story of Farrukh Zafar, founder of Gagism.com is quite interesting:
According to a statement on Innovation Punjab website:
“The campaign focuses on how we can facilitate access to fast and cheap internet and e-payment mechanisms to open new avenues for entrepreneurs, seek feedback from citizens to improve service delivery and identify corruption; work with industries and universities to cultivate and foster innovation online in Punjab. We’re doing this because it shouldn’t be too hard.”
