[Review] Huawei Ascend Y635
Huawei Ascend Y635 is packet in a small rectangle box which is hard enough to keep the Smartphone safe. Following Items were found on un-boxing.
- Huawei Ascend Y635
- Data cable
- Charging plug
- Li-po 2000 mAh Battery (replaceable)
Build and Design
Ascend Y635 is a phone with a solid body and simple looks. It has a 10.2 mm thick body and weights 178g, it’s quite thick and heavy. You can hold it in one hand but you will need both hands for typing on this Smartphone.
Its back is rough which helps user to hold it, volume and power keys are unconventionally placed at left side and we have 3.5mm jack and micro USB v2.0 port on top (no OTG support). It has a Li-Po 2000 mAh removable battery which can be accessed opening the back cover, which is easy to remove.
It’s a dual SIM Smartphone, both micro-SIMs and micro SD card (up to 32GB) can be inserted after removing its battery. It has three touch buttons at bottom of its face which are not part of its screen, these buttons are unfortunately not back lit which makes it difficult to operate the device in dark.It has a 5-inch, 854×480 resolution (196 pixels per inch) and screen-to-body ratio of 65.6%, a big screen with such a low pixel density will fail to entertain you with HD videos, movies and games due to its low resolution.
Its screen is not much bright so you may find difficult to operate it in sunlight even with full brightness. If a quality large screen is your priority must be ready to pay more because this is a pretty good screen considering the price tag. It has a 2MP front and 5 MP back camera with LED which I will discuss in detail later.
Ascend Y635 is powered by an ARM Cortex-A53 1.2 GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM which makes it a powerful entry level Smartphone. Most of its competitors have less than 1GB RAM which gives it an edge over them. Its internal storage is only 4GB a part of which is occupied by operating system, it can be extended up to32 GB using a microSD card. You won’t be able to install many apps requiring installation in internal storage without slowing down the phone. Unfortunately despite powerful processor and 1 GB RAM Kitkat do not run smoothly on Y635, its user interface is laggy and takes too much time to load applications. Especially its camera app disappointed me due to lagging.
It is highly unsuitable for playing demanding games, it was nearly impossible for me to play subway surfer due to constant lags. Its Li-Po 2000 mAh removable battery performs well, it gives up to 300 hours stand-by time and up-to 15 hours talk time with 3G network and takes approximately 3.5 hours to get fully charged. Undoubtedly its battery performance is impressive, its extra ordinary battery timings is enough to last 2 days with normal use. The device gets heated sometimes while using normal apps and even during charging which is really disappointing.
Benchmarking is used to evaluate overall performance of Smartphone. The following applications test various aspects of device’s performance and bench marks them with other devices. The three main apps (Antutu, Vellamo, Pi and GPU bench mark) have been used for Huawei Ascend Y635 Review.
Geekbench 3 & AnTuTu Benchmark
Single core score 485
Multi core score 1420
AnTuTu Benchmark 21830
GeekBench 3 and AnTuTu 4 are benchmarks which put to the test the hardware combo inside the smartphone. GeekBench 3 is more CPU-intensive, whereas AnTuTu 4 is a compound benchmark. Performance shown by these two benchmarks is satisfactory, AnTuTu benchmark indicated poor gaming performance.
Pi (lower is better)
Pi is used to benchmark phone’s performance, lesser time your phone takes in calculations indicates higher performance.
AnTuTu HTML5 Test
Chrome browser 787
Multi core 1625
Contrary to its actual performance results from Vellamo benchmark are quite good.
Ascend Y635 has Huawei’s Emotion 3.0 user interface (also known as EMUI 3.0) it is simple and smooth and do not have much of pre-installed softwares. EMUI 3.0 has eliminated the app menu which means following the iOS style all installed applications can be viewed on your home screens. You can change the themes which will also change the icons of basic applications, widgets can be added and resized on screen. Number of screens can also be easily altered, a pinch on a home screen will show most of the screen setting options. By pulling down the top status bar you can view short-cuts and notifications.
There are two home screen styles “standard” and “simple”, as their names suggest standard is the default screen style, simple style have colorful tiles instead of icons. When you view a photo or video, flick up to turn on the transfer function. You can then share the photo or video to a friend nearby using Bluetooth, Bluetooth will be enabled with transfer, ensure that Bluetooth is also enabled on your friend’s device.
Ascend Y635 is a dual SIM device so we have Dual SIM settings to enable/disable respected networks and to set default SIM for calling, messaging and data network.
You can easily change the lock screen picture by using the short-cuts available on lock screen, when playing music you can view the music player by double tapping the lock screen. There is also a camera short-cut on right bottom corner of lock screen.
Phone manager is a very useful pre-installed app which assists in power saving, filtering (black listing) unwanted numbers, data traffic management, notification management and locking apps which you do not want to be accessed without code. Another useful app introduced by Huawei is HiCare, it’s a customer care service app which helps users to access customer service centres
Ascend Y635 has a built-in Power Saving app which helps to increase the battery life and keep giving consumption reminders when apps are consuming power in background. It has 3 power saving modes “Ultra” “Smart” & “Normal”. Normal mode is appropriate for gaming and videos, Smart mode will be suggestible for daily use and Ultra mode may be activated when battery is low. Ultra mode changes the user interface of the mobile and allows basic functions like Dialler, Messaging and Contacts.
Huawei has made a compromise in the camera of Ascend Y635 by introducing a 5MP Rear camera and a 2MP Front Camera. Rear camera is able to capture pictures up to (2592×1944) pixels resolution which is supported with an LED Flash light. Features like video recordings and HDR, Audio note, All-focus, watermark are also present with the rear camera. All-focus mode is useless with a 5MP camera as its camera quality is not enough to focus on different items properly, its camera app is slow at loading and snapping.
Camera can be turned from off screen by double clicking Volume down key. There is no dedicated key for camera available so you have to use on screen button, you can also capture photo by touching any part of screen. Volume keys can be used to zoom in and zoom out in camera app, you can also alter these functionalities in settings
One cannot expect much from a 5MP camera, Following are the pictures and videos captured during the camera test.
All of the following snaps are captured using 5MP back camera.
Calling & Messaging
Ascend Y635 has a simple and decent Dialler app, it has a notepad button which allows you to take any notes during a call which is really practical and helpful. Instead of 3 different apps there is a single app for dialler, contacts and messaging which enables to switch from one function to other easily. Call quality is good and there are no signal problems during calls. Messaging app is also simplistic, you can zoom in/zoom out to make text larger and smaller in an open message thread. Contact pictures do not appear in messaging and dialler main screen, individual picture can be viewed in thread view (by opening the message).
Any contact’s message thread can be pinned on the top of messaging app by selecting it and using pin option. Keyboard is not much comfortable for messaging, I replaced it by a third party keyboard for typing. As it is a dual SIM device, two network options (with network name) appear on bottom of messaging app giving you choice to send message via respective networks, same is the case in calling application. Its calling app do not show identity of contacts saved with country code (+92 for Pakistan) and its messaging app do not show identity of contacts saved without country code which is the most embarrassing part for me.
Ascend Y635 features 4G LTE which is a next generation of mobile internet technology, it enables users to browse internet at a much faster speed with compared to 3G and 2G. High speed internet means you can easily perform data intensive tasks like video calling, watching online videos, uploading your stuff on social media. The thing you must keep in mind is, in Pakistan just few operators offer 4G LTE and its rates are obviously higher than 3G and 2G. It also supports NFC.
- Value for money
- 4G and NFC
- Solid build
- Dual SIM
- Non HD display
- Low internal storage
- Laggy UI
If you need a 4G LTE Smartphone having a 5 inches big screen with a very affordable price tag, Huawei Ascend Y635 is the one you are searching for.
