[Review] Jazz Xplore JS 7

Jazz announced the launch of two affordable Smartphones from Jazz Xplore series named JS1 and JS 7 on 15 July 2016. Three Smartphone models initially launched were JS 300, JS 500 & 700, these 3 were launched in December 2015. JS1 and JS 7 can be considered revamped versions of JS 500 and JS 300.

Following Items were found inside the box.

  • Jazz Xplore JS 7
  • Micro USB cable
  • Charger Plug
  • Ear-phones
  • Booklets
  • Warranty card
  • 2000 mAh battery

Jazz also offers following benefits bundled with JS 7

  • 300 MBs 3G internet
  • Rs 300 free balance and
  • Unlimited Facebook & WhatsApp for 3 months.

It is not at all essential to use only Jazz SIM in this phone, SIMs from all service providers work perfectly without any restrictions but you won’t get benefit of Jazz special offer if you use another service provider’s SIM. For details view terms and conditions at bottom of this post.

Build and Design

Jazz Xplore JS 7 has a sturdy plastic body and a 5 inches IPS display 480 x 854 pixels (~240 PPI pixel density) which is one of its primary features. Its body size is appropriate for one hand operation. Its corners are smoothly curved and its build quality seems to be good. Its body is smooth and not prone to finger prints. Its design seems to be too simple and boring, Q mobile have produced much better designs in same price range, a fresh design was needed for JS 7. 5MP back camera is placed at upper middle part of its back with a LED flash just below it and mobile speaker near the lower left corner.

A catchy yellow and red Jazz X logo is printed beneath its camera and Q mobile logo at its bottom in white. A 2 MP front camera is at upper right corner on its face and ear piece in the middle of top bezel. Lower bezel consists of 3 touch sensitive navigation buttons.

JS 7 has been manufactured by Q Mobile for Jazz, it seems to be an updated version of JS 700 which was manufactured by Haier. Its 3.5 mm jack is at its top, power button and volume rocker are placed at right side and standard micro USB port v2.0 is at bottom. Viewing angles and screen contrast are not up to the mark due to comparatively low display resolution.

Inside the back cover there are 2 standard SIM jackets and a Micro SD card jacket. Removable 2000 mAh Li-ion battery can also be found under its plastic back cover. JS 7 is available in three different colours.

Jazz Xplore JS 7 features a Quad core 1.0 GHz processor, MTK chipset and 1 GB RAM. It has 8 GB internal memory which is extendable to 32 GB using a Micro SD card. 1 GB RAM is enough at this price range but we were expecting a batter chipset and higher clocking of processor. Anyway it still works smoothly and it is unfair to expect an amazing gaming experience from a low range android Smartphone phone. It is an appropriate choice for users moving from a feature phone to Smartphone. It is equipped with 3G internet which means fast browsing will be not an issue at all. It is equipped with 3 sensors Accelerometer sensor, Proximity sensor, Light Sensor.

We have performed various synthetic benchmarks to ascertain JS 7 ‘s performance compared to other devices .Most of the benchmarks used in this review are not much appropriate for lower range Smartphones like JS 7, as they have bench mark data of mid-range and higher range phone which is not much comparable.

Vellamo is a benchmarking tool that includes three primary Chapters. The Browser Chapter evaluates mobile web browser performance, the Multicore Chapter measures the synergy of multiple CPU cores, and the Metal Chapter measures the single core CPU subsystem performance of mobile processors.

Multi core score 1186

AnTuTu Benchmark

Score 23477

SS JS 7 (4)

GeekBench 3 and AnTuTu are benchmarks which put to the test the hardware combo inside the Smartphone. GeekBench 3 is more CPU-intensive, whereas AnTuTu is a compound benchmark. Performance shown by these two benchmarks is satisfactory.

Single-core performance is the most important performance metric for Smartphones. Every application will benefit from improved single-core performance while only specialized applications will benefit from improved multi-core performance.

User Interface

It has a simplistic user interface; it uses Android 5.1 which runs smoothly. Five shortcuts appear when unlocking the lock screen i.e. Call, Yandex search, Shortcut to  Messaging and camera. Its default screen wallpaper is Jazz X, which can be changes by long pressing home screen or by touching menu button and selecting wallpapers on bottom left. Shortcuts to app drawer widgets and settings also appears by single touch on menu button, screen can be repositioned but somehow cannot be added or deleted here. Notification centre can be accessed by pulling down status bar, it shows notifications from all apps and any downloads in progress. By pilling down notification you can access to shortcuts. Which can help you to manage your basic mobile settings easily.

Contacts app is separate from call history, it gives you option of selective the SIM you want to use to make a call when both SIMs are entered in this dual SIM phone. Call quality is good and there are no signal problems during calls or otherwise. Messaging app is also simplistic, contact pictures also appear with every contact. Keyboard is comfortable for messaging, keys are appropriately large for typing once you get used to them. There is an option to assign a different background to every chat in its default messaging app. A message appears for confirmation when ever you send a message to any service number to avoid any accidental message which can incur service charges.

JS 7 has a 5 MP primary camera and 2 MP front camera. Its primary camera produces fine results specially in day light, it also has a single LED flash light for capturing pictures in low light. Picture quality is good considering a 5 MP camera but Q Mobile should have used a 8 MP rear camera instead which is available in Smartphones from same price range. Here you can view unedited pictures from its rear camera.

Many phones from same range have VGA front camera but JS 7 have a 2 MP front camera, you can’t expect a perfect selfie from a low-end Smartphone but I tried my best to get a nice selfie as a sample.

Pix JS 7 (10)

Its camera allows you to take pictures while making videos. Video and picture quality can be adjusted but it is not much useful function here as its back camera is only 5 MP. It also has face detection, smile shot and self timer functions. You can use colour effects, adjust white balance and adjust exposure in the camera settings but none of them is suggested to use considering the mega pixels of camera.

Jazz Xplore JS 7 has a 2000 mAh battery which can be considered a big battery for this Smartphone. Battery is one of the most important features in Smart phones especially in Pakistan where our phones need to survive in load shedding. This battery can last for 2 to 2.5 days easily with constant messaging, few calls and few hours of browsing. It takes almost 2 hours to fully charge its battery.

Following are main differences between JS 7 and its predecessor JS 700

  • 5” display
  • 2000 mAh battery
  • Jazz offer

  • Dull design
  • Low resolution cameras

Jazz Xplore JS 7 is a low-end entry-level Smartphone with a 5” large display, which performs basic Smartphone features very well. Jazz offer adds to its value. A chipset and better cameras would have made this phone best in the price range but there is always are trade-off between different features.
