PTA Initiates Formulating Telecom License Renewal Framework
It seems that PTA is taking the issue of telecom license renewal seriously after the pressure built by this issue raised by many online blogs, publications, and newspapers. Recently Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a statement stating
“The renewal of licence and associated spectrum at the end of a licence period will be as per policy of the government. In case of renewal of licences, PTA will make recommendations to the federal government within the timelines stipulated in the respective licences.”
It has been widely reported that the telecom operators were upset due
to the delay in announcement of license renewal guidelines. These operators are
an important source of foreign direct investment; the government should try to
protect their interests as we are in dire need of FDI as a country. Certainty
in very important for every business, the uncertainty surrounding the license
renewal procedure and the issue of new spectrum were the primary issues raised
by the telecommunication companies.
Issuing a statement emphasizing
on license renewal procedures is a very responsible step by PTA. PTA committed
to keep all stakeholders in mind while establishing the final plan.
According to the official
source government of Pakistan is expecting inflows worth $2 Billion from the
resolution of pending PTCL privatization (Etisalat) issue and renewal of telecom
licenses in this fiscal year. This will really help government in managing its expenses
in this difficult time.
