Service Providers

This page is a compilation of list and links for Telecommunication Services Providers (mobile, wimax, wireless local loop and voip - excluding fixed line) in Pakistan, with links to related posts on my blog and additional references listed at the end. Also see the Pakistan Telecom Wiki for related information.

1. Market Overview Of Mobile Companies in Pakistan
Lets start with a review of recent subscriber growth. At 2006 year end the total subscribers were 48.2 million. In June 2007 the total mobile users reached over 63 million. Based on numbers published at PTA website for 2007, the total number of subscribers (technically it is the number of SIMs issued) was 76.6 million, a teledensity of nearly 49%. In 2007 the average growth rate was about 2.5 million new subscribers each month! After second half of 2007 it seemed as if the growth had slowed down but overall it was fine. One remarkable achievement was by Zong (formerly Paketl) which launched very successful campaigns towards 2007 end completed rebrand launch in April of 2008. See chart below for a breakdown of market share by mobile companies (click it to see a higher resolution version).

Here’s a brief description of the top mobile companies in Pakistan.

MobilinkAt the top is Mobilink, the Pakistani unit of Egypt-based telecom company Orascom. It has been operating in Pakistan since 1994. Subscriber share was around 42% at the end of June 2007.

ufoneUfone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pakistan Telecommunication Co. Ltd (PTCL),  is now under the control of Etisalat group of UAE. It has 22% of subscriber share and added the most lines (2.4 million) from 2006-07. For those in Pakistan it is the one company where they can easily invest locally.

waridtelWarid, owned by the Abu Dhabi group of the United Arab Emirates and sister of Wateen group is number 3 with 17% market of subscribers. Recently it sold 30% share to SingTel.

telenorNorway’s Telenor, a recent entrant with about a billion US dollar investment in Pakistan has been doing well, based on its recent earning report. It has about 16% of the market share. Telenor stock is listed in the Oslo stock market (TEL) and in US(TELNY.PK).

paketlCMPak, formerly Paktel, is the latest target of foreign acquisition. After it got acquired by China Mobile it is in the process of rebranding. CMPak has 2% of market share.

2. Fixed Wireless (WLL)
vfone-nolr.jpgPlease see this post for an overview of the WLL operators and technology. Wireless local loop services are based on CDMA and are considered an alternative to copper lines. Recently rebranded Vfone service by PTCL is the market leader and recently there have been many intersting marketing and pricing moves. You may also follow this link for a list of WLL providers from PTA site.

3. WiMAX
wimax-s.JPGThis post provides a summary of WiMAX situation in Pakistan.Wateen has emerged as the largest player and has started advertising for its WiMAX services though as of Sep 2007 the pricing had not been announced. Mobilink is in the race as well and has made a few acquisitions to speed up its Go-to-market plan. Then there is Burraq Telecom.

4. Voice over IP
Companies providing VOIP and call forwarding services. In other words: International calls, local rates. See my posts about VOIP related issues for Pakistan.

yep they are doing something like this iam not a dealer but a simple user of these networks. my valdity was gonna end in february 2007 but they recycled my sim and dont even tell me about this but when i went on their buisness center located in Islamabad they told me that as u have not used ur sim since last three months so we have recycled ur sim. so i told them i have valdity on my no. so they said we canot give u back ur no but u can get a new no if u want so they gave me a new no free of cost. i dont know why they are doing this. currently my old no is in use by someone else. every one is looter in Pakistan. Allah bachaye Pakistan ko.

yesterday i heard anews that pta is launching 3g and wimax technology in mobile industry in few months. i think thatit is not the right time to introduce 3g in pakistan because 3g was started in europr and it is very expensive so i want to say that first we have to fulfill 2g technology services like mobile tv,caller tunes but we see that only telenor is giving mobile tv and i heard that mobilink is introducing mobile tv on the end of july 2007 now come to caller tunes i want to tell u that paktel, warid, telenor and mobilink is giving this service ufone not yet so than it is not fair to introduce 3g at this time because it is very expensive so it give a big lose to mobile companies. i know that 3g has very powerful service like live video sharing to any nolike mms in mobilink, ufone and telenor is 64/64/100 kb is sent not bigger than these.so my opinion is that at this stage we dont want to change gsm to 3g like india they have 150m mobile customers but they dont introduce 3g technology yet. i hope pta will take this issue seriously, taimoor khan 03454118997

  17. VASWANI NAVAL on August 19th, 2007

Well I guess no body can stop the IT revolution as it has already take the momentum.

New services with quality and excellence would be the only option left with the company for survival who are offerening telco services in the world of cut throat competiotion.

This competion would bring the operator into race for wining which will enable and enhance the creativity and novel service. and also the PRICES.

Customer would be the big Winner.

  51. Ali Raza on December 5th, 2007

I am a mobilink Jazz subscriber. I am the victim of cellular fraud by mobilink subscriber. My story is as below:

Some one called me in the morning and congratulates me that I have won a 500 Thousand rupees prize from scratch card lottery. He asked me to note down the number written on my mobilink sim and he will call me few minutes later for re-confirming the number written on sim. So I noted down that number, he called me after few minutes and told me the number which was as same as the number written on my sim.

I was surprised because he knows that number which is not common and just I can check it from my sim card. This thing confirmed me it is not a fake call because he knows the secret number written on my sim. Further more he said now I need to go to their franchise located at water pump F.B.Area along with my original NIC Card, SIM and scratch card which I charged earlier on which I got this prize. But before going to franchise he asked me Rs. 3,500/- fee registering my prize. I asked him how can I give him the fee before going to Mobilink outlet or office then he explained me to buy three Rs, 1,000/- and one Rs. 500/- jazz card and after scratching them send him the scratch number on the cell number from he was calling me. So I did that and sent him Rs. 3,500/- scratch cards. After that I went to that mobilink franchise which is located at Water Pump F. B. Area and inform them that I am that lucky guy who got Rs. 500 thousand prize from mobilink but they denied and informed me from there office nobody called me. They informed me that I might be a victim of some fraud and my money is gone and now nobody can help me. After that I visited Mobilink head office located at Clifton but they also refused to take any responsibility. They told me daily they are getting so many complaints like this but they are unable to do any thing against them.

I gave them the number from which that guy called me I showed them those scratch card which numbers I sent him. But they said nothing can happen now.

My question is that, how mobilink can not trace the number on which that card has been loaded. In this technologically advance world I think it is very easy to keep trace of that number on which my scratch card has been loaded. But the country’s largest cellular network company’s officers are still saying that they don’t have any record.

My suggestion to all cellular phone companies is that, please stop all advertising campaign in which these companies offer attractive prizes and due to these kind of campaign few claver people take the advantage and try to deceive the innocent peoples like me.

Again its was surprising for me to see Telenor branded van in Faisalabad offering the mobile number portability facility to customers at their door steps. It is the best facility of this company,
As a Pakistani i request to concerns that each mobile company should promote this facility at all medias because mostly people did not know about this facility. Governament (PTA) should advertise this facility at papers and TV channels.

Its nice to see in Pakistan the ongoing Telecom Revolution but today we are moving towards bad, ugle and worst condition after the rights of coustmers have been denied again and again by the cell phone companies.
Like hidden mobile charges from LDI to a GSM network or GSM to GSM this all is not monitered by the regulator PTA in a good manner.
Look at how much time we people stay on hold when we contact a help line service for some query in GSM networks.
Today despite a telecom revolution we still lacks expertise to manage things espiaclly in a manner to gauge the operators and mange the needs.

It is just great now Pakistan is one of the countries TOP list, where there mobile and internet users are investing a lot in the market and helping companies to extend their business in this existing sector….!

But it is just very bad, that the users have-had been never been facilitated by the companies. There are still so many voice issues in all the service providers in Pakistan.

The same stands for the companies are providing either dial-up and/or broad-band.

The rates I feel are not as cheap as should be since the countries like Pakistan and the users in here are not possible to pay the high-amounts, Currently they do but even then they are not yet entertained with the great services like in the Europe, America, North and South America, Australia and Oceania.

Lets think, Pakistan is a new born baby country, with wars, so many political issues, fraud leaders, and all….But do we really care? No we do not…! We should have-had went out for strikes in order to get the better services….But it was never the case! Since the Pakistani users (the majority) are using these services for negative things, and about 5% or maybe more less people are using the services for all the offcial, family or for positive purposes.

Well….My comments are other than discuession going on in here….But in case any of you guys providing services in Pakistan is studying this message and going through, You should be requested to play a good role instead and sort out the issues we are facing for over the years.

    All the best.

    Dear All,

It’s very soothing to see that Pakistan’s telecom ecosystem is at it’s best and the growing at an exponential rate.

Ironically, I’m a bit suprised that there is no CDMA service in Pakistan. On contarary in India we do have GSM and CDMA as well. Now the service providers out here are planning to go ahead with something more which is WCDMA. I think that an awesome strategy, which is benefitial for both customers (as they get more advanced featured mobile handsets) and for service providers as through this they will get highter ARPU (Average Return Per User).

I think it’s a good topic for a debate, let’s initiate something like that through this site.

    Cheers,
    Faisal.

dear khalid please send in ur e mail address i will give u the same !!!

  84. Saleem on February 17th, 2008

    Dear Faisal,

There are companies in pakistan who are using CDMA technology for telecom also. But due to cheap rates of GSM companies and free roaming throughout Pakistan those CDMA companies are unable to grow up as happened in India.

Good thing about Pakistan telecom is that all companies have flat rates to call anywhere within their network. No local and NWD concept within same network. But in India, company charges extra if you calls on same network but in different city.

Second biggest plus point is that Pak telecom companies offers Mobile Number Portability. Means if you are not satisfied with operators services then you can switch to other company with same dialing and user number. This kind of service is available in only few countries of the world. Credit goes to Pakistan Telecom Authority.

An other Pak Telecom plus point is that couple of companies have started WiMAX mobility services in whole Pakistan also and new companies are going to start soon. This WiMAX is not available is maximum countries around the globe. Broadband DSl came few years back and now it seems history also because no one can compete with speed and mibility of WiMAX technology.

International calls from pakistan is as cheap as VoIP calls.

Inshort, Pakistan citizens are enjoying all those services of telecom which are under use of USA and Europe. PTA is bringing all services well in time to pakistan.

  85. Faisal (From Mumbai, India) on February 18th, 2008

    Hey Saleem,

First of all I would like to say that over the period of time CDMA as a technology has not only evolved but also flourished in India. There are now 45 million subscribers with Reliance Communications only approximately 35 Million or more are with Tata.

If the CDMA service provider companies of Pakistan are unable to match the price points of GSM players then it’s a flaw in their jacket, look at Reliance (where I’m working, as a senior consultant) no GSM service provider can match the price points that we offer along with the range of products and also the VAS.

According to me CDMA is a disruptive technology and hence new in Pakistan that is why people are hesitant to go for it. They prefer GSM over CDMA, since there are lots of option in GSM ecosystem.

The one thing that I’ve understood from your thread, is that the tariff is very flat in Pakistan and therefore it looks very strange to me.

In India we do have MNP (Mobile No. Portability), I think we do have to pay some extra to avail this service.

In India we do have WiMax which I suppose is a 3g technology.

For Your Information there are exactly 57 countries which are having this (WiMax) technology running at their networks.

    Rest after receiving your views.

    Cheers,
    Faisal

    Assalamoalikum Mr Faisal,
Nice to hear your views and Mr Saleems explanation.
I guess that I should express my views too.I am basically a Pakistani and an officer in merchant navy, I have paid several official vists to India too, to the port of Chennai, Kochi, Mundra and Vadinar.
I have use every service offered by Indian networks and Pakistani networks, own a Hutch, Airtel, BPL sim and For Pakistan I have Warid, Ufone, Telenor, Mobilink sim cards too, Out of this two are postpaid and Ufone sim is on International roaming too.
But I am really sorry to say that the rates advertsed on TV / News papers in India and the money the user finally has to pay in sum vary by a great amount, and I must say that if you sum up all the things including all sort of taxes, the final charges incurred to a customer are enormously more than what he would pay using a Pakistan network.
First of all there is a huge deduction on every recharge…. Use Warid in pakistan, charge 1000 rs and you get 1000 rupees…. in india charge 1000 and you merely get 7hundred something… where will you count this???
In Pkistan pay 150, get a new sim and the balance in sim is 150 toooo… In india pay 250 for htch sim and I think you get a balance of merely 50 or hundred… on top of it there is huge tax on all out going calls, move from mumbai to vadinar and you are on roaming, in Pak move from Kashmir to Karachi and nothing happens.
Airtel services are same as Mobilink in Pakistan, Signal dropping is very common and calls are dropped with full bars. Hutch/vodafone and other networks really disappoint in terms of GPRs, the data upload / download is extremely slow, with BPL data uplod is always way too greater then download, check you e-mail (I calculated in Pak was merely 16 kb, with header downloads only) on BPL the mail bax opens in a century and data counter shows 50 kb, plus GPRS is way too expensive than pakistan.
In pakistan pay 9 dollars and Use GPRS free for whole month, In India merely 3 hours usage of data costs as much.
I know CDMA is very popular cz its cheap in India, but brother telling you very frankly Pakistani GSM is cheaper then Indian CDMA (Calculating every thing and all sorts of taxes) and Pakistani CDMA is expensve then Mobile in Pakistan but it is still cheaper than Indian CDMA.
Tlk about international roaming, and there will be a bid bill waiting for you at the end of month if you are using any Indian sim, I paid 70 dollars for my pakistani ntwork int roaming, while my frien using Airtel roamin pays 300 dollars a month and uses the no far leser than me, just one example Ufoone internation roaming charges 0.15 dollars incoming in UAE, and hutch charges 60 INR, almost 1.8 dollars per minute….. You can imagine how big the gap is between the two.
And one more thing Pakistan was the First country in World to introduce MNP, it is a news of BBS, And Pskistan is going to be first country to introduce 3g on Gsm networks in developing countries of Asia.
Dears, I know I am just a user but I guess I have had too many experiences of using celular networks of the world. I have used T-mobile USA, Voafone in Spain, France, Wind and Vodafone in Italy, HR VIP in croatia, Telsim in Turkey, Voda GR in greece, Beeline in russia and am having plenty sim cards too, but tell you what, Indians on my ship alway found it cheaper to call from their sim cards while I always found my folks calling me more cheaper. International calls to 26 countries from Pakistan is loacal call and to many others is Just nominal.
Having used so many networks in so many countries including India and USA / England, franec, spain, italy, croatia, UAE, saudi arabia, japan (NTT Docomo), Taiwan, Malysia…… I must say using mobile in pakistan is a joy, I admitt that services are yet no that high end as in Europe / USa but the once that are provided are even more cheaper then rest of the world, If I found any country closer to as cheap and better services…. you would be surprised but it was BANGLADESH, and the networks are GRAMEEN (Telenor) and WARID.
I hope this explaind what a normal user has to say.

    Dear Babar / Mehran Khan:

Thank you for your posts. However the good idea should be directly to contact and reach the appropriate companies Technical Departments. For Instance, if you are looking to offer your lands for the Mobilink, Warid or Telenor, etc. You may directly contact the service provider instead.

I personally will reccomend you to visit their Technical office. This way, You will have an in person meeting that may led to success to your desire.

However: This might be helpful in case already no coverage exists there in your premises. Because they can not re-invest on the same over and over.

even though the mobile communication industry has reached to the maturity level but still i think that cellular companies will keep on this growth momentum and now there will be huge competition for retaining customers by providing quality services, which will ultimately benefit customers

  144. Luqman Technologies - Pakistan on April 24th, 2008

    Dear Ravi Kumar,

Thank you for taking your time to write your comments on this web page. Yes it is true. The telecom worldwide is making continues success. For instance just in Pakistan, currently 8 operators are working and many more international firms are exptected to invest in Pakistani market. The rates are being quite more cheap and this surely going to help lots of mobile users in Pakistan and worldwide.

Thank you again for your comments and we hope to listen from you again.

    Kind regards,

    Assalam u Alaikum,
There are certain organizations that have a huge footprint, like PTCL and WAPDA. There mistakes especially willful mistakes (some may call such willful mistakes a crime, but I haven’t) effect not one or two but tens of millions of ordinary Pakistanis. And in this regard, what people have to say about WAPDA is no hidden story.
However, PTCL, a behemoth, is acting or at least trying to act like a silent assassin. Since most govt organizations have been privatized, PTCL and it’s dedicated employees have taken up the task of maintaining the corrupt, inept, degrading and abusive reputation that has been built up by the govt sector with so much effort, over the years. It’s employees are lazy, inept, disobedient, unruly, uncommitted and disloyal, who are better of at verbally abusing everyone or engaging in physical assault upon their opponents. It’s managem
