CEO Naeem Zamindar and Chief Commercial Officer Gibran Ali announced that the new Wateen is focused on enabling its customers’ lives and business by being the responsive and innovative broad band solution provider.

“We have learned from past mistakes and now will be able to capitalize the opportunities in the market,” Ali said.

Take a look at the new TVC below.

The official PR follows:

Wateen Telecom, Pakistan’s leading converged communication services provider is proud to announce its new corporate identity in line with the vision laid out by its new management team.

On the occasion, Mr. Naeem Zamindar, CEO Wateen Telecom, stated that “The new Wateen is focused on enabling its customers’ lives and business by being the most reliable, responsive and innovative broadband solutions provider. Our customers will feel the difference, now, and over the years to come, as we are committed to delivering continuous and never ending improvement to transform our customers’ lives and business. This is the vision we hope to share with the world: to enable a communicative and inter-connected way of life, that will lead the people of Pakistan to a brighter future.”

The philosophy behind the new visual identity represents ‘freedom’, based on the unlimited possibilities offered by Wateen for its consumers to connect, share, exchange and communicate whatever they desire. The main concept for the design is to break free from all grids, rise above all constraints and simply explore the freedom provided through the internet.

With this renewed spirit and a new management team to lead the transformation, the company has undergone a complete overhaul. The turn-around is completely focused on building a dynamic and customer focused organization, investing in upgrading its network and re-engineering its systems and processes to deliver outstanding services.

Wateen aims to become Pakistan’s largest and most trusted name in converged communications, providing the most advanced triple-play services in telephony, Internet and Cable TV, as well as networking and data management. To this end, Wateen has already begun partnering with some of Pakistan’s leading institutions to expand its network and bring its vision of providing the internet to every household in Pakistan a little bit closer.

In the last year Wateen has significantly expanded its fiber-optic network, particularly in rural areas and underserved parts of the country, where people have the most to gain from access to this vital resource. Recently, Wateen won a multi-million dollar bid from the USF to lay fiber-optic cable in Balochistan.

According to recent World Bank estimates, around 68 percent of Pakistan’s population resides in rural areas – around 122 million people. Yet currently only 2-3 percent of this rural population has access to broadband internet; Wateen believes that high-speed broadband can help connect these underserved areas to the internet and by extension to the world.

Wireless high-speed broadband is in fact the ideal stepping stone for launching any development campaign in rural areas, as it is not only the perfect tool for generating employment and literacy, but it also brings investment opportunities, which translate into sustainable economic growth. The company is also expanding its network into Afghanistan, providing VSAT services to Roshan Telecom Afghanistan, amongst other innovative and ground breaking projects.

Wateen Telecom Limited will float initial public offering (IPO) worth Rs 2 billion in Pakistan equity market on April 20-21 in order to expand its infrastructure network and retirement of debt.

The telecom giant will issue 110 million shares to institutional investors and general pubic at a price of Rs 10 per share amounting to Rs 1.1 billion with a green shoe option of 90 million ordinary shares. This will increase the paid up capital of the company from Rs 4.174 billion to Rs 5.275 billion.

The equity generated amount will be repaid to financial institution on the account of Letter of Credits (LCs) worth Rs 14 billion and produce capital for the company to acquire the rest of 49 percent shares in Wateen Solution (Pvt) Ltd. The shares’ subscription will be categorised into four for the various classes of investors. The IPO’s are pledged to underwrite by 14 leading banks of the country. Wateen Telecom CEO Tariq Malik said the company has long-term and committed investment plans in the country despite any political economy and law and order situation of the country.

The company is playing an active role in making Pakistan a regional hub for information and communication network with its optic-fiber international gateways.

Wateen is laying optic-fibre to connect India at Wagah and Chaman and Tukhum to link Afghanistan, he said and added it will offer services to various telecommunication services inside and in neighboring countries of Pakistan. Malik said the company is aggressively pursuing its multiple plans in all its services including wireless telephony, broadband and infrastructure services that will enhance its revenues manifold. Its corporate clients include leading financial institutions, cellular phone companies and television channels. The company has acquired a lion’s share in international calling traffic and it has been a leading performer in broadband and wireless local loops sectors. Arif Habib Group of Companies Chairman Arif Habib said the equity markets have shown impressive performance in the past few weeks on the stable cooperate sector and its flourishing financial health.

He said the opportunities are lucrative in Pakistani equity markets for local and international investors as it is recognised by all rating and financial institutions as the best market in delivering handsome returns with the lowest business cost. Arif Habib said the clouds of crisis in judiciary, politics and economy have been scattered and the situation is improving in the country for business and investments. The developments on judiciary, NFC Awards and tabling of 18th Amendment are good signs for the country’s stability that will be weighed positively by international rating agencies.

Internal sources informed us.

Wateen haves a total of 973 RAN sites in Pakistan, of which 243 are in Karachi. The on-going expansion project by the vendor, Motorola, is supposed to add 66 more sites in Karachi.

Reportedly after experiencing delay from the vendor’s side in deployment of the sites in the expansion phase, Wateen’s RAN team took up task to itself and have successfully installed and commissioned four sites. The RAN team-lead feels proud of his team’s achievement.

Commenting on this, the RAN team lead Tehseen Ahmed said that this is the first time in the history of Wateen, RAN team have deployed sites without involving the vendor, all the installation and integration of these site are done by us. He also said that they shall continue the same with the remaining sites of the new expansion phase.

Delay from vendors is not a new practice but such efforts from the operators will definitely give them a nudge and make them realize their responsibilities to complete projects on time.

Recently my father wanted internet connectivity at his work site in the vicinity of Port-Qasim (Karachi), I suggested him to go for wireless broadband. So, my father asked me to get the best wireless broadband connection. This was not an easy task and above all my finding surprised me even more.

I decided to check out wi-tribe connection but calling their customer support I got to know that they offer no coverage in Port-Qasim, the second most busy sea-port of Pakistan. Well I couldn’t connect to change and had to change my mind to try out qubee, although they have a pretty well drawn coverage map on their website which others lack but again did not have coverage in the area.

Checking out PTCL evo and Mobilink Infinity I found the same, they also fail to have coverage in Port-Qasim. My last resort was Wateen, the first wireless broadband provider of the country. Calling at Wateen, I get to know that the call center agent does not even know if they have coverage in my desired vicinity, they only know that the coverage is available through out Karachi and to check for a particular area I will have to check myself by visiting any franchise. With this I got into argument over what are helplines for that lasted for 5 mins and the agent ended up sending me the address of the nearest franchise via SMS, which I never visited after all this frustration.

The whole point I want to make here is that the coverage area of wireless broadband services still needs a lot a improvement and to assist consumers better, coverage maps like the one qubee has must be available on all operators website and the helpline agent must also be educated completely about the service.

I would have really appreciated Wateen’s attempt to put on the complimentary kiosks for travelers and providing them services.
Have a look.
